Waiting for a Discount on Golf Gear... waiting... waiting...

I am only playing social golf in Thailand at the minute but will be heading back to my home country in the near future.

So for the last 6 months I have been hunting around for a new set of irons.

Anyway, I have really had my eye on a brand new set of Srixon irons at one of the shops here in Thailand. They are the same type of irons that G Mac Uses and are peaches to say the least. They are actually a 2011 set of irons but are still stocked at the shop I have been looking at. I have had my eye on them for 6 months.

They are selling for 28000baht. For me, that is a bit on the steep side, especially considering I would have to buy them without taking them for a hit (net in the shop only) and the model of the clubs is from 2011. Srixon don't even make golf irons anymore. So 6 months ago I gave the salesman my number and told me when they are on sale I will come down and buy them.

At least every 3 or 4 weeks I have been popping down to the shop. They are still there. Today I attempted some wheeling and dealing. I told them I would buy a new bag and the irons = what would be their best price?, bearing in mind these clubs are close to being 3 years old and haven't been sold for at least 6 months in their shop.

The guy helping me, the same guy who had my number - who knows my face from everytime I come in got on the blower to his boss in Bangkok. No dice, no discount. Price stays the same. Outside the shop it currently has a store wide promotion going on for 20 - 50% off (doesn't say everything - but certainly something new and not set up like that everyday) so I thought there might be something in the pipeline. Some Nike irons that were priced around the same mark have been cut but 6000k, no movement on the Srixons!

He then rang his 'friend' who runs the equivalent shop in Siracha, no Srixons in stock there. As it happens the Srixons at 'my' shop are the last remaining set of these irons in Thailand??.

I am not waiting for the bargain of the century but I know you would think that there would still be some sort of leeway with a profit margin for someone wanting to buy clubs and a bag for a set of sticks that is just gathering dust month after month.

Up to them of course, their shop... my pining will continue!

Fair call on buying them if I want them, but I don't want to pay their price... and they have taken 6000k off the set sitting next to them.

Just shooting the breeze.

So they do give discounts, for some reason not on these. Yet!

Fair enough, if you go back and they have been sold will you think, " I wish I had bought them now" or wouldn't you be bothered?

My mind set has been if they get sold to someone else so be it.

My minor frustration is that I am standing there in the shop trying to make a deal for them (buying a bag and irons)and they aren't budging. That's their perogative, they don't have much impetus to move stock. My instincts tell me that they will still be sitting there for another 3 years, or they can lower the price call me and I will be there tomorrow!

I know the golf gear caper can be fairly cutthroat in other markets. I am used to walking into a shop for gear and getting some sort of deal. They would meet you half way to stop you walking out the door and buying from their competitors. Not here obviously, which is a shame.

I have no clue where you get this kind of dodgy info from, but let's just agree that Srixon is well and continues to make excellent irons just as before. I have a soft spot for the 506 myself, but I play a set of Clevelands, which is also Srixon...

Bit of research. Srixons have new irons available in Japan, in the U.S they are now Clevelands and XX10. Hence online golf shops in the US don't sell Srixon golf irons. Same deal in the UK, Australia. The set I have been looking at are the Z-TX2's - what do you think the equivalent clevelands are?
