Dengue fever exacerbates in Isaan

BANGKOK, 9 July 2013 (NNT)-People have been warned against dengue fever outbreak as the number of patients in 4 North Eastern provinces has increased to 5,406, 5 of whom have reportedly succumbed to the disease.

The Department of Disease Control’s Nakornratchasrima Office has revealed that 5,406 people in Nakornratchasrima Chaiyapoom, Buriram and Surin have come down with dengue fever so far.

Students and young adults of between 14 and 24 years old are said to be the largest group of patients. 5 people, 3 from Surin and two others from Nakorn-ratcha-srima, have died from the fever.

Schools have been told to keep their environment free of mosquitoes and their breeding grounds. They have also been urged to close all containers and keep dry any objects that can hold water in order to prevent the insects, whose growth development takes around 7 days to complete, from laying eggs in them.

The rising number of patients, according to the Department, indicates that the outbreak will be imminent in the next season. Communities and schools alike have been told to frequently inspect their surroundings and destroy mosquito’s larvae, if found.

Prevention is always better.

Will rush to purchase mosquito net(s) rather than chemicals.

does this mean the south is pretty safe? (for dengue i mean)

The South always has its share of dengue, though I haven't heard any claims that it's worse than usual this year.

P.S. to NNT ... 'exacerbate' is transitive.

It is everywhere in the region. Whole of Thailand as well as Laos, Cambodia, even Singapore.

And, this happens every 3 years or so pretty reliably. Dengue is always present (endemic) here but every few years there is a large spike and it hits epidemic levels,
