I'm not a favorite of Facebook, to be honest I hate it actually as it is an infringement on my privacy, but like many others I have an account.

Today I notice under messages that I have a message from a person I think not to know.

The message is under the tab " other ", not under inbox.Does that mean spam?

A search for the name in the Facebook search bar gives no results, so I understand that he's not a Facebook member, then how can he send me a message.

Anyone care to educate me?

Thanks for the suggestion, but my question was more precise, how can a certain person send me a message on Facebook if his name doesn't exist in the FB archives.

Does his message look like a spam? Could have been someone opened an account sent a load of spam, got reported and deleted? Just a guess really...

If someone who is not a friend of yours sends you a message it's sent to the " Other " folder. I've never had spam in that folder. I'm a member of a few FB groups and now and then a member that's not a friend will forward me a link or give me some advice outside the group.

Let's say I have a motorbike for sale in a Chiang Mai Facebook group, some people will enquire on the page as to details, other people will click through to my profile page and send me a message. As they are not friends of mine, this message is sent to the Other folder as mentioned. It's the safe way to allow communication without people accessing your profile on FB.

Open the folder and you can change your settings if you wish. I hope that helps.

No it doesn't look like spam, he just posts a message how are you doing and my first name

But I guess everyone who sent you a message on you facebook has to be a member of facebook himself.

So if you do a search for that name on facebook, it will lead you to his page.

With me a search for the name gives 0 results

OK, my second answer as an unenthusiastic FB'er.

If they appear under 'Other', then I believe they are not in any Friends or Group list that you are in so unsolicited. Can't you click directly on their name as it appears in the Inbox/Other folder and go see who or what they are?

Personally, I have never received a message in the 'Other' pigeonhole but if I didn't know who it was and wasn't sure, I would just ignore it. If I wasn't too concerned about knowing or learning who it was, I would open the message and hit the 'Report as Spam or Abuse' button.

No I can't click on the name. I'm not much concerned, but what if he has a few billion $ where he has to get rid off biggrin.png . If I don't answer he probably give it to someone more elaborate.

Maybe he's someone I know, but don't know his name or forgot it do dementia.

Is there a risk with replying to the message? As I said I don't know a thing about FB and try to avoid it as much as possible, but I just think I might be stupid to not reply, or just the opposite.

I understand that, but what is strange to me is that I can't get to his page, and it seems that there actually isn't a page at all.

That is one of the priviliges of the Elite Card, the ability to send untraceable posts on FB !whistling.gif

If you opens it, it will release a virus checking your Thaivisa account for any negative posts about the card,

If negaive posts are over 10, the TPCvirus will eat your harddrive!!

So you are in deep shit.

Stop being so bloody paranoid, and start enjoying life!thumbsup.gif

Now that was funny, wait a minute until I get myself up from the floor. By the way if this is a privilege of elite card members only , then you are definitely not entitled to it.coffee1.gif

What this has to do with being paranoid.

I want to reply to this person, if he's genuine, but the fact that he is untraceable on FB makes me wonder.

If I want to send a message to any FB member I will have to log in first and the recipient can have a look at my page to know who I'm actually are.

That would annoy me too.

It doesn't really annoy me, I should say it makes me very curious and since I have no experience with FB other then that it is known to infringe on your privacy, it makes me suspicious to reply.

I think BF assigns emails to all it's registered users so if your name's John Doe for example then the email would be something like [email protected] so it should be possible to email someone a message, I don't know how it will look though.

That may be a possibility, but wouldn't it in that case show the email address of origin ?

I gonna try it out myself right away

Edit : Nope doesn't work, mail gets returned.

Your facebook email address is the name that appears after the / on your profile URL.... @facebook.com You can send and receive external emails from within Facebook mail, or at least I can.

Just had a look at that message again and noticed the following. Don't know for sure if it appeared like that 2 days ago.
