Hunt begins for criminal mastermind Kamnan Poh

Police have launched a nationwide manhunt for notorious influential figure Somchai Kunplome, better known as Kamnan Poh.

Chon Buri Provincial Court yesterday issued an arrest warrant for Somchai, after he failed to appear to hear a Supreme Court verdict on corruption charges levelled against him.

The court has twice postponed reading the verdict, after defence lawyers claimed Somchai's health was failing.

On March 22 the director of a private hospital testified that Somchai was too ill to appear in court.

The case, in which Somchai is accused of master-minding corrupt land deals worth Bt93 million in Chon Buri, is more than a decade old. The lower courts found Somchai guilty as charged and sentenced him to five years and four months in jail.

That is the least of Somchai's trouble. Also before the Supreme Court are allegations that he masterminded a failed attempt on a rival's life.

The rival was eventually killed by another group of gunmen unconnected to Somchai.

The lower courts have passed guilty verdicts and if Somchai's appeal fails he could face 25 years in jail.

Provincial Police Region 2 Commissioner Lt-General Jong-rak Juthanon yesterday led more than 20 police officers in a sweep of Somchai's home in Chon Buri.

He was not there.

Jongrak said police in Nakhon Nayok, Chachoengsao, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaew, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat were now involved in the manhunt.

Chon Buri police chief Maj-General Anan Charoenchasri said Somchai's wife claimed he had left the house a week ago but would not tell them where he had gone.

"We are now looking for leads as to his whereabouts," said Anan.

Police believe he may have fled to Cambodia. Unquote..........................................................

This is typical of the double standards in applying the law of the land, perhaps his friends at the local English newspapers can now do an article /interview with him from Cambodia when they celebrate his next Birthday.

What an evil B****** he is and of course well connected with the heirachy once again.

I suppose with the jails being full, due to detaining of to many petty criminals it leaves room for one more poor soul, of the less privilidged

Despite reports that former colourful Saensuk Municipality mayor Somchai Kunplome, alias "Kamnan Poh", has fled to escape being served an arrest warrant to a neighboring country, at least one senior police officer still believes that the 'influential' man in this eastern province is still hiding somewhere in Thailand.

In Thailand, popular use of English slang terms, the expression "influential person", means someone who has acquired 'unusual' wealth from less than legal sources.

Likewise, while "Kamnan Poh" simply means "Mayor Poh", in popular understanding it is better described as 'Godfather', in the Sicilian-style.

Police Lt-Gen Jongrak Juthanont, Commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 2, said on Saturday that police had investigated and found that Mr. Somchai did not exit Thailand by land, but he could have left by sea if he wanted to escape arrest.

Personally speaking, Kamnan Poh, is a well-known person and is likely to be in hiding someplace locally where nobody knows him, Pol Lt-Gen Jongrak said.

Touching on reports that Mr. Somchai could have escaped to Koh Kong Island in Cambodia, he said if this was true police could request Cambodia to extradite him under the terms of an extradition treaty made between the two neighboring countries.

The warrant for his arrest has been circulated throughout Thailand, Pol. Lt. Gen. Jongrak added.

Police issued an arrest warrant against Mr. Somchai Friday after he failed to appear at the Provincial Supreme Court to hear the verdict on corruption charges.

He was found guilty by both lower and appeals courts of graft in a case regarding the purchase of a 140-rai plot of land valued at Bt93 million in Banglamung District near Pattaya during 1992 and 1993 for a rubbish landfill project.

Earlier, he was found guilty by the lower court of plotting the murder of a local politician in nearby Rayong Province, Prayoon Sitthichote, in March 2003 at a Chonburi wedding.

Both verdicts were being appealed.
