I can think of a lot better reasons to "sack" a cop. Those reasons never happen, and don't make the headlines.

Yes it is a big deal, because when ordinary Thai people play the same game, these very same policemen come and put them in jail.

Agreed with a slight qualification, as usual here you only get done if you are a nobody but it's ok for ordinary Thais to play in protected casinos.

Easy to lock up a nobody as they can't pay and are not connected so no one one gets on the cops backs for what they've done.

My memory of Bkk police is ;- mostly thin with tight uniforms.

(Perhaps monks as someone suggested, with oversized uniforms. )

I actually feel a bit sorry for what has happened to them during this "lull before the storm".

Quelling people againt people en-mass could be a daunting job.

The illegal activity was exposed via pictures that have been widely circulated on the Internet.

"The Metropolitan Police Bureau will ask the National Police chief to order their dismissal," Camronwit said.

The 11 policemen come from various police stations in Bangkok. They were deployed during a recent crowd-control mission as the government was preparing to deal with demonstrations against the amnesty bill.

Most of the policemen are at the junior level. The highest-ranking member of the group is a second lieutenant.

People's Army said to be gathering weapons

The Metropolitan Police Bureau has received reports that the group known as the People's Army against the Thaksin Regime has begun stockpiling nails, slingshots, knots and large fans.

"According to intelligence reports, these items have been handed out to some 50 to 100 motorcyclists at the rally site," the bureau's spokesman Pol Maj-General Adul Narongsak said yesterday.

The People's Army has organised a rally at Lumpini Park, which is not under the Internal Security Act, Adul said.

The government has invoked the act in three of Bangkok's districts to deal with demonstrators who disagree with the amnesty bill being deliberated by the Parliament. The three districts are Dusit, Phra Nakhon and Pom Prab (Sattru Phai).

Adul warned members of the People's Army not to bring any weapons or similar items to the areas under the ISA.

"That will constitute a legal offence," he said.

Group insists it has peaceful intentions

The People's Army against the Thaksin Regime yesterday dismissed a report that it was hoarding weapons such as slingshots.

"I can assure you that no demonstrators will harm police," People's Army core member Thaikorn Polsuwan said.

"Our demonstrators have never hurt the police."

What a change in terminology, yesterday they had been sacked, expelled from the civil service, shot at dawn and then hanged, drawn and quartered.

Today the boss is " planning " to dismiss them but had he said something about disciplinary proceedings and if found guilty could face dismissal I might be more inclined to go with it.

Sadly true Alfredo. My SOL divorced her senior policeman husband because he was gambling all the family money away, usually when boozing with his police mates. Another young male relative who is a nurse at a Bangkok hospital got involved in betting on the football games. Lost so much money his gf (lovely girl from good family) bailed him out. He got in debt again and actually brought her to see our house so she might lend him some more (thought she'd be impressed with knowing he has distant farang relation - idiot). His gf finally gave up on him - did he learn, NFW - straight back in debt, then asking if he could stay at our house as he was scared of the gang he owed losses too. My missus told him to **** off and get real. Sad, but these guys both have booze as well as gambling problems.

She is already at the extensively "Borrowing" part, I already more or less bleed out!

Not much to gain from me now, at least in the moment. But she still finds funds, mostly borrowed, she can use to play!

Must have been stressful knowing you were about to face a bunch of unarmed largely middle aged civilians in your battle gear and you only outnumbered them about 30 to 1.

The investigation will prove that they were only watching, not playing. No law broken. Back to business as usual.

The history of gambling started during Xia period in China about 2,000 BC . It was invented by a general so that the soldiers won't have home sick during the long war in China.

The good points are if control in small amount just for entertainment purposes for the police officers where have noting to do during night time and able to get the relation closer during games.

Many coutries like Malaysia, Singapore, LAos, Cambodia and Myanmar have legalise gambling already. I myself are against in gambling as the problems like stealing, cheating, selling house items and fighthing with family members for money etc cause by evil den but for 5-10 THB for game should be alright for the officers off duty.

Gambling isn't illegal in my country. If a cop were to do something illegal in my country (such as accepting a bribe) then he would be sacked.
