Thai Custom's/duties on a battery and plugs and cables from the US

I ordered a backup battery and a cable with plugs from Amazon and the package was reshipped by a commercial reshipping company and today I got a notice that it was to be picked up at the CM international customs office.....not my local post office. Total price around $50 and I have invoices to prove it. Just wondering how much they will hit me for??

Thanks Jake, but that link was absolutely useless in that there was no info on my OP and not one FAQ. Does anyone have any first hand info on what my tariff may be on a battery and cables costing $50?? shipping costs were outrageous at $150 and a few other contents were vitamins and spices.

Your problem is probably not the duty...which will be about 30% of the toatal cost including shipping plus 7% VAT.

As you have imported vitamins these almost certainly will need an import licence as health goods so without that you will not get things. Getting an import licence involves going to another department and applying and paying a fee sometimes they need a medical certificate to say you need them sometimes not.

Sending mixed packages is not a good idea. Customs is charged at the rate of the most highly rated item in the package so even if most of the values is books which are duty free they will still be taxed if there is a higher rated item in the packages.

My guess it's going to be 30% import tax(kinda their catchall rate) +7% VAT plus another percent or two in various fees. I don't think they will require you to get an import license but they will just hit you with around 40% in total fees and in the box will be general form letter in Thai that talks overall restrictions. And when you read the restrictions you'll get the impression they shouldn't even had allowed the shipping of the package/items into the country and just seized it. Been there, done that, got the tee shirt a few times several years back. But you may get lucky and escape with just the 7% VAT. Usually if you can keep the total value plus shipping of an items before 1,000 baht the package will sail through customs/postal system with no fees at all. Now, if you use express shipping services like FedEx/DHL/UPS/etc., it seems they are almost partners with Thai customs in ensuring X-amount of customs is usually collected...once again based on a couple personal experiences over the years...maybe I was just unlucky. But so far when shipping items through regular postal systems and the total value is below 1,000 baht things have just sailed through and delivered directly to my home without any fees. So many various factors involved in terms of the type of item, value of the item, what country it was shipped from, etc., to have a standard answer. Good luck.

Just picked up the package...........

Retrieving my parcel was quite a wild goose chase beginning with the wrong location on the google map provided.

Luckily I had my Thai wife with me as there is hardly any English speakers in any of the offices.

It took more than an hour and a half to process and filling out forms and going up and down to a few other offices. The electronic items, backup battery, cables and plugs were not an issue but the spices and herbal supplements were confusing to them and we had to get special clearance from the food and drug office. Ended up paying 770thb.....a figure that they just picked out of the sky, I'm sure because they didn't have a clue about the contents.

Lesson learned, have a friend or relative re send items to you via regular USPS priority mail.......not express mail. Do not use those reshipping companies as the total extra cost was 2X what I would have paid a relative and the Thai post always delivers unopened, no questions asked. [knock on wood]

Not so sure of that especially for the vitamins. Believe it or not they will try to help a decent foreigner do something they would not let a thai and I think that applies to the licence for the supplements.

Don't think it will help as she has adopted my family name and will appear as a falang.

Just took a look. import duty for batteries is 40% (class 8506.50.00 ) wire,cable also 40 % ( class 8311.30.90 )

Edit: the links aren't working. But i have to admit the search is not very user-friendly

If the duty is 40 % and product is 50 USD, Shipping 150 than we have

80 USD duty

20 USD VAT

Total something like 110 USD (as they use different exchange rates) and maybe a fee like 200 Baht.

My lucky day!!

I've had a couple of other encounters with Thai customs and they CAN be flexible and forgiving.......if it's your lucky day.

One exception was when a visiting friend brought my cheap nokia cel phone back to the US and returned it by postal and the post office charged me 600thb to get my cel phone back, that was only worth the same amount. They told me that I could contest the rate, but I decided it was not worth the trouble and just paid the 600.

The outrageous shipping charges were because I made the order thru shipito.com. Not only was it a rip off with lots of surprise extra costs, but really stressful in dealing with their website and customer service. Their final mistake was that I requested USPS international priority shipping, but they went ahead and sent it off by international express and I think that's what thru up the red flag. I'll never deal with them again!!

Often the Thai custom is very nice. Compare to Austria or Germany I would like to kiss them.

Best is usually if you have a friend in the USA, who forward it to you by USPS. I get tons of things from customer, they declare it as samples as they are samples and never paid anything.

In Europe they want that every sample is made unusable to qualify as sample which is idiotic for machine parts that should get tested.
