Alcohol Price Increase, Chiang Mai?

Recommended Posts

Higher taxes/ prices apply from Midnight Tuesday into today Wednesday. Still a little unclear as to the effect on, say, a bottle of Wine. Went to Rimping today (lunchtime) and the "333" bins were still selling for 333, and yet apparently Whiskey and Beer prices had already been adjusted.

There is some suggestion/ implication in the Bangkok Post that Wine costing less than 600 Baht not affected, but find that difficult to believe....if the Governments out to improve its revenue stream, why would they leave the "average price" wines alone?

Of course, it could simply be that Rimping havent got around to repricing yet, or maybe existing stock can go at the old price?!

Any thoughts/ ideas/ greater knowledge than me welcome!!

PS. We bought quite a few of the 333s just in case!!

I heard that the price of cigarettes are also going to increase, but don`t know by how much?

Think these are good incentives to start cutting down or giving up the fags and booze.

A bar where I used to go really a lot has upped their SSC price to 60 Baht yesterday.

So that's when I stopped going.

It's 9:08am now, won't be long before they start wondering why they haven't seen me for so long.

Haha.

Good thing. Raise those prices. As a result people will consume less alcohol.

You can have the wine. I don't pay much attention to alcohol prices. If ya have to ask how much it cost ya can't afford it.

Another one ripe for having house/car half-inched by beloved. whistling.gif

If my name were Gates, I'd still be checking prices... it's not all about being able to 'afford it', also a case of not wanting to have one's pants pulled down.

Some how I think Gates has more on his mind than a price increase in a bottle of wine.wai2.gif

I doubt consumption will be sginificantly lower.never worked that way in other countries. Increasing tax on alcohol and cigarettes has nothing to do with health issues its just a revenue raiser, something the current Government needs to do. If you are going to subsidise rice growers , rubber producers and whoever else comes knocking on the door the money has to come from somewhere.

Add recent increases in cooking gas and fuel and you have the perfect scenario for higher inflation. Food prices have increased already in supermarkets, and restaurants/food vendors will have no choice but to revise their pricing upwards. The relatively well off will absorb it ,the poor and disadvantaged have no escape

Incorrect, people however rich or poor will always have money for cigarettes and alcohol, those with little money often have money for a third vice to go along with the aforementioned others, gambling.

From what I've heard the prices go into effect Monday, Sept 9th. Taxes on the cheaper beer and wine will increase by 50%, and by a lower percentage as prices increase....

Thailand is about to become much more expensive my friends.

Are you saying that a big bottle of Chang at my favorite pubs in Chiang mai will go from 70 baht to over 100 baht as early as Monday? Hard to believe.

Thailand is about to become much more expensive my friends.

Alcohol and fuel taxes go up at midnight on the day of the announcement and take immediate effect to avoid stock-piling, so they have already gone up. BKK Post predicts an increase in tax revenue of 10 to 15 Per cent so it doesn't sound as bad as it first seemed. It is suggesting that beer would go up something like 5 baht for a litre, which will probably translate as 5 baht for a small one and 10 baht for a big one in the bars, depending on the type of place it is. As regards to the supermarkets, the Post is saying retail prices of liquor and beer are rising by 5 or 10 or 20 percent. My guess is 2 or 3 baht on a big bottle of beer and maybe 20 or 30 baht on a bottle of standard whiskey.

How much more expensive Thailand is about to become depends on how much you drink of course. How big a problem is this for you?

What is SSC and what is the point of using acronyms that aren't easily deciphered? If it's an alcoholic drink, it sounds cheap to me.

Sang Som Thai rum and Coke. It's cheap but not bad. Gives a mild headache though.

That would be SSTRC, which is even more undecipherable.

If he's drinking sangsom at 9am he probably gets a mild headache too, and if he's regularly drinking before noon, he'll be back.......

When tourists are looking at where to spend their hard earned cash, a lot do internet research and it doesn't take a computer geek to discover that alcohol prices in Thailand are way higher than their neighbours and getting toward Western European prices. (check out numbeo.com) Now I know the moralisers will say that it shouldn't take booze to make a good holiday, but after a hot day of temple hopping and other cultural pursuits the majority of tourists look forward to a refreshing drop of the amber nectar of an evening and are capable of working out that Thai prices are now some of the highest around.

As far as I, concerned, on my current meagre budget, It'll mean less beers and a shot or two of Hong Tong to top it off! I'll still drink the same amount because no government is going to tell me what to do, but Ill drink cheaper grog - more spirits- which are worse for me than beer and so, more worryingly for the government will many Thais.

The Americans learned many years ago that trying to ban booze - whether outright or by tax stealth- doesn't work. The Thais will too. This change in peoples drinking habits may mean that the government does not get the increase in revenue it is hoping for. Lets hope so!

I would imagine that a miniscule number of tourists will be lost because of this price increase. Assuming that they drink 3 or 4 pints a day on average, would an extra 50baht or so a day be enough to cancel their holiday in Thailand and go elsewhere instead ? Not really. I don't think the increase was particularly aimed at discouraging people from drinking, as it would take a much higher hike than that to have an effect on consumption, particularly of an addictive product. It is more likely aimed at increasing government revenue, and allowing for the small short-term drop in sales, I'm sure they will achieve their aims. Comparing this small increase in prices to prohibition in the USA is labouring the point a bit.

Anyone raising their prices for alcohol is ripping you off. Just been to Makro - prices are the same as last week. The new prices only apply to newly supplied alcohol. Anything already in the shops or bars has no increased tax to pay. If any shop or bar has upped their prices already, boycott them post-4641-1156693976.gif.pagespeed.ce.Jg

You should try Carlsberg (brewed in Laos) or Chang Export. Both malt beers.... nice ( well the Carlsberg is) gotta try the Chang .I'm not usually a fan. But had Chang draught which was OK.
