Without doubt the most horrendous place I have ever visited... Auschwitz. No post-editing. That would destroy the sombre colours of the day.

...and Auschitz-Birkenau

Krakow.... monument in memory of the Jewish people who were massed in this square prior to deportation to Auschwitz. One chair sits at 90 degrees to the others, facing a nearby courtyard where many others were excuted.

Again, no post-editing: it was a sombre day: best to keep it that way.

Wieliszka, Poland. The salt mine. Everything you see was crafted from salt by the miners - even the crystal chandeliers

The Polish miners were devout Catholics: they carved many, many chapels where they worshipped in the galleries where they worked the salt.

Pictou - Nova Scotia.

This is a replica of the Hector, which set sail from Ullapool (near where I used to live in the Highlands), bound for Halifax, carrying Highlanders who had been forced from their homes under the Clearances. They had almost reached their destination when a storm blew them literally half way back across the Atlantic, the result of which was that many died of sickness, disease and malnutrition, whilst crammed into the hold beneath the deck.

This is the house of a Roma gypsy local leader. The Roma bigwigs try to outdo each other by building larger and larger houses, yet many of the rooms will lie empty, and the family, as often as not, will live outside under the stars.

This is a beautiful city in Transylvania. The germanic appearance is due to its history, it being an ethnic-german enclave.
