I'm trying to find a good tailor that does wedding dresses. The places I've been to have quoted me 40,000 to 60,000B which seems excessive. My budget is closer to 12,000B. Any recommendations?

Oh, and I'd go for a premade one except I'm getting married in a cold place and I can't find any pre made dresses with sleeves.

Don't be so daft as to waste 60k on a wedding dress, go an hire them.

You can hire for a week his and hers from 3000bt for the lot.

We recently went around about ten places, the most expensive was 17k for the set, most circa 5/6k.

We went to new shop, and hired traditional thai attire and it was brand new.

It doesn't matter if its too big/small because they are skilled in alterations.

Another interesting statistic 8/10 where run by ladyboys....the ladies running these shops were clueless.

believe me your 60k can be better spent.

I would say have a look at a shop on Ragang road called ADINDA , next to the vegetarian restaurant , there is a Thai lady who cuts all her dresses suits and wedding herself , she rents out and sometimes if not to busy she's okay to tailor for sale as well , she cuts a very good fit and from what I saw won many prizes for it .

I and my wife went to this lady for our wedding , and she just made a new design and cut for my wife , with very reasonable prizes , well prized for the quality and effort taken in , we went all over the city and mostly they ask horrendous prizes indeed, especially for wedding .I found the lady has a foreign husband , maybe that was the reason I didn't felt over prized . We paid for the lady Thai style 1900 male 900 , euro style lady 2500 male 1900 , if cut new got to add some of course .Interesting and much cheaper then the ladyboy lot .

As I said , the lady I mentioned can make for order customized , you can choose your own design , think prices differ mostly on design chosen , materials and work time . Think it will not cost you more then 15k all together at most , better have a look yourself and have a chat , doesn't hurt anyway . good luck finding what you need .

A note on the "hire" recommendation, I cannot rent one as I am getting married back home in the US.

So can you not rent in the US? Get measured here. Supply the measurements.... :D

Thanks for the ADINDA recommendation. Renting in the US costs more than buying off the rack and I would prefer to buy and keep my dress anyway. A friend has offered to take me to a few places soon, I'll report any good results.

My Wife had one made in Bangkok (THB 30,000)... my reasoning for her having her own dress was that as I was growing up I saw my sisters try on my Mothers Wedding Dress. At one point there was even a possibility for my Wife to wear the same dress my Mother was Married in, however a long sleeve dress (for a UK winter wedding) was not suitable for Thailand.

I think every lady might wish for their own dress. Something many men won't understand, but then I don't understand the need for handbags etc, but accept the differences, I like watches !

The Dress itself covered two functions: The less formal Engagement Ceremony where there was a 'pull away' part and the same dress became a knee length cocktail dress. For the more formal Evening Ceremony the Dress was full length and later on in the evening the 'pull away' part came off so my Wife could dance and enjoy the evening...

We've never regretted spending money on something that will be worn only once.

The same guy has made a couple of cocktail dresses for my Wife... the latest one which deftly fits a 'growing bump'...

I'm sure there is someone in Chiang Mai who will be able to do the same for the Op: She's doing the right thing by asking around.

OP: Best of luck...

There is a wedding dress shop opposite the UN Irish Pub......no idea about prices though

There are actually two opposite the UN pub. The lady at the big pink one was fairly rude (turned me away at the door) but suggested the smaller one a couple stores down. They will be making my custom dress for me at less than 10,000B. The woman doesn't speak much English but she really knows her stuff. I've done seamstress work so we understand each other very well.

I also visited the Adinda shop previously mentioned. The woman seemed competent in skill but she was a bit busy and didn't seem to want the work.

I will try to remember to post a photo here when the dress is completed.
