As far as I am aware you can not do any work unless you have a work permit that includes voluntary work! Maybe I'm wrong!!

I know you need a WP for volunteer work, but, the work performed by these organisations can be done by Thai's, so, how is it possible they issue WP's for these activities?

You are correct, but you have to find a place to volunteer and then apply for the work permit. Not vice-versa

Great question Nithya. Good for you for wanting to help. Please ignore the commenters above. There are many, many ways to volunteer that don't require a WP, but that is not what this thread is about. Check with the organisation.

Red Cross

SEEK

Go Eco Phuket

Phuket Animal Welfare Society (PAWS)

Tourist police was mentioned, but the regular Royal Thai Police and Immigration Police also use foreign volunteers.

US Navy League

Raumjai and Kosoldorn (sp?) rescue foundations.

The Big Little Project

Phuket Has Been Good To Us

Most schools also accept volunteer teachers.

Well, your post is somewhat conflicting with my post, and others.

So, the question is, "At Thai Law, do you need a WP to perfrom volunteer work in Thailand, or not?"

Work permits for blood donors?

The Blood Bank at Wachira Phuket Hospital recently appealed to foreigners to come forward and help in liaison work between the hospital and foreign blood donors. Do I need a work permit to do this?

David, Patong. Saturday, June 18, 2005 12:23:17 PM

“There is no need for a work permit. I will submit a list of volunteers’ names to the hospital director and he will present them with a certificate stating that they are actively helping society and for how long. This certificate may help volunteers obtain longer permits to stay in Thailand.” Saturday, June 18, 2005 12:23:17 PM Sriroung Choophak, head of the Blood Bank.

“We have had no experience of this kind of volunteer before. However, certain kinds of volunteers must have a work permit and we handle these applicants on a case-by-case basis.

Work permits for charity workers?

Do foreigners who want to be members of, or work as volunteers for a non-profit organization need work permits?

Tom Fekete, Phuket. Saturday, August 17, 2002 10:17:15 AM

We don’t check non-profit organizations [to see whether volunteers have work permits] because our main focus is on foreigners who do work reserved for Thais.

Saturday, August 17, 2002 10:17:15 AM Pairoj Suksamrit, Labor Academic Adviser in the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare.

I do some occasional volunteering for a few of the above mentioned groups. I certainly don't need a WP for this. If you plan to work full time as a volunteer, then that is different. As the employment official stated, it's case by case.

These comments are 8 and 11 years old. Thailand, especially Phuket, has changed a lot over this time.

That's true, Peter, but we would not want a member working illegally here, and risking a fine, gaol and deportation, all because they were "volunteering" would we? :)

Good Grief!!! You don't need a work permit if you are Thai do you???? The thread interests me as my wife would like to do volunteer work with young children. Get off this whining about work permits and let the thread roll on!

Funny enough I've met an Ecuadorian guy called Pedro the other day in football at Headstart. He has a website called The Volunteer Bay. You can search and get into his site, I don't want to give his web link to do advertising or anything. He has lots of volunteer jobs listed there. I'm sure he can be helpful. As far as I know the volunteer projects should provide you WP. But ask him, he'll give you detailed information.
