Snakes, snakes and more snakes

Featured Replies

In the last month we had 4 small snakes in the garden

Today the dog had a 1.6 metre cobra cornered against the wall which we dispatched

Has anyone else noticed a increase in the amount of snakes around recently

Yes, just this weekend we had 2 in the front porch area,

I assumed they are grass snakes - green colour but had a red band about 2 cm long just behind its head. I am correct?

We get tree snakes that are a green colour, i do not know if the have a red band behind the head

Rat snakes and cobras

Its only the cobras i worry about the other 2 are harmless

Probably flooded out from their burrows due to rain.

We are right next to some plantation for coconuts etc... with lots of water around.

DOes the snake powder work? I dont want to kill them, but also dont want my baby bitten or wife even :)

Its the dryest wet season i can remember in the 8 years i have lived in Phuket

We have had some rats around lately the cobra we despatched was swallowing a young one

Lucky for the dog she was to close to it and would probably been bitten otherwise

A thai neighbor took it home to eat so it was not wasted

I think it was wasted when you wasted it!!!

Can you enlighten me about snake powder, never heard about it? Is this available in Thailand? We had a 1.8 m rat snake a few days ago behind my fridge in the kitchen. We have a 4-year old daughter we don't want to get bitten by a snake.

The garbage increase, the collectors don't make to keep up, more rats around at least in our area, more snakes. Never thought I should see the rats so frequently ever again around housing estates in Phuket, thought that era was over.

Yellow/green powder, readliy available for about THB50/kg, we use it at work. As I understand it creates a terrible smell for the snake so they stay away. I will get the Thai name if it helps?

E: Do you mean this one or something else? Red-necked Keelbeck Snake

Choice between snake and dog, snake gets wacked no problem

Just noticed today a couple of youngish small snakes hanging about the foot paths. Even had one taking a swim in the pool this morning. I hope they all go away soon.

กำมะถัน - Snake powder

Sulfur. Commonly available here as it's used for hardening the rubber from the trees.

I tried that couple of years ago when I had quite a few snakes around the house. Once I saw a snake slither over the sulfur trail.. I concluded that it does not work.

It can also be a nasty stuff for pets.

Ps. Where to buy saltpeter? :)

VERY hard to find saltpeper - But nitrate is a bit easier

Same problem where we live, they did pick up the rubbish daily,, sometimes now its once a week

The rubbish attarcts the rats, the rats attract the snakes, recently saw a king cobra cross the road over 3 metres long

on his way to eat the smaller snakes

I commend you lot for dealing with them on a daily basis... Cobras especially. I don't read much on anyone being attacked by them though. Is that just because it happens so often it doesn't make the news?

Our neighbour had a baby cobra strike at her recently after she nearly stepped on it in her driveway. She killed it with her snake spear and says has killed several over the last couple of years. I don't blame her for killing them as she lost a much loved poodle to snakebite 3 years ago.

Our cat killed another baby cobra in the street outside, and several others have been sighted nearby. Probably all came from the same nest.

The nearby farmers kill dozens of the bigger cobras when they come after their chickens and ducks.
