Baerboxer
No warning from Germany. I just checked. It is a travel advisory! Not same same...very different! The UK is similar. Warnings about the South and the Temple area on the Cambodian border. Otherwise the information really advised sensible behavior and caution to avoid demos etc. Certainly not a travel warning and not to go.
Bagwan
TAT: 16 countries issue travel warnings BANGKOK, 12 November 2013 (NNT) – According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), 16 countries have already issued travel warnings, urging their people to avoid demonstration sites in Thailand. In wake of the current political situation in Thailand, 16 countries worldwide have warned their people traveling in Thailand, for their own safety, not to go near or pass through any of the demonstration sites in the kingdom. The countries include England, Norway, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Taiwan, Canada, Australia, Israel, Brazil, Singapore, Belgium, Spain, Netherlands, France, and Sweden. According to TAT Governor Surapol Svetasreni, there has been no report from the Association of Thai Travel Agents of any hotel cancellations in spite of the warnings, and the ongoing protests do not seem to have any effect on the country’s tourism industry. He, however, admitted if the situation dragged on, the impact would be difficult to assess. As for the situation in the disputed territory between Thailand and Cambodia, the governor said the TAT would keep a close watch on the impact from the November 11's ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), adding that the atmosphere along the border line is still calm. -- NNT 2013-11-12 So Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland think it is not necessary to issue a warning? Well done the National News Bureau of Thailand. Finger on the pulse as usual. NOT. BTW is Geography on the Thai education curriculum?
bander
"No hotel cancellation yet: TAT" TAT you are so full of lies, why not admit the fact? When 13 country's warning about safety in Thailand there are somebody who cancel the trip, don't need any Sherlock to figure that out
Torrens54
Come on folks, give the TAT a break! Yes, I worked for it in another country for many years but I do not anymore, so I am not making this comment because of any old friendships. The countries issuing the "warnings" are simply doing so as a "matter of course." If they don't and one of their citizens is injured, there would be "hell to pay on the home front". I have also done PR for the Government of my country of birth, so again, I know what I'm talking about. Based on my years of experience, I know that the majority of would-be holiday makers are not going to cancel their plans to visit Thailand because of what is happening in BKK at the moment, so please stop "kicking the TAT." If some of the "naysayers" think they can do better than the people who work with the Authority, I suggest they get off their posteriors and go Volunteer to do something to help promote the country that they have chosen to live in. The country that allows them to stay here, even if they can do nothing but grizzle about it. Suggest you either show some respect for Thailand or go home! Did we really have to wait that long for a "if you don't like it- go home"? The country that allows me to stay here, even I have the audacity to criticize it! Thank you, Thailand...for allowing me to pay more taxes than most of your citizens and still treat me like a second class human! ...why should we stop kicking TAT? They don't even know the difference between a travel warning and a travel advisory! So how much did you pay in Tax and so what? again, if you feel so bad about Thailand, again I say to you, Go Home, obviously you are depriving your home Village of a very important person, the Village....... Thaddeus
This must point to something I never knew. TAT must have a member of staff on duty in every hotel, or how else would they know? One to fabricate the numbers, several thousand to sit in foyers.

whybother
I do not want to be the single contrarian here, but why the need for the travel warnings? Has anyone heard of a single violent incident directed against foreigners? Not exactly like visiting Egypt, Syria, or Yemen, now is it? My guess is that if you ventured into the area where the protests are taking place, they would invite you to join them for some som tam. So, not sure what all the fuss is all about. Could someone explain this to me in a rational manner? Is all hell expected to break loose? I and nearly everyone else in this land hope the ridiculously simply minded amnesty proposals are shelved. The warnings aren't to say "Don't travel", they generally say "be careful of protests". Anyone that cancels are either staying where the protests are, or aren't reading about / investigating what is really happening.
mic59
I wouldn't stay away for this reason, but my last holiday to Thailand was ruined by the weather. Maybe 16 countries should have issued travel warnings for that.
bangon04
Glad for once the USA is not joining this parade of weenies. Come to Thailand, it's a great place, especially at Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai. Is Loy Krathong back on now? Thought that was another of the TAT's brilliant ideas to cancel it. How are they going to have a silent and respectful civil unrest in Bangkok during the period of mourning?
wooloomooloo
So Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland think it is not necessary to issue a warning? There's good reason for that - in that the FCO covers England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, also know as the UK. https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/thailand
lemoncake
Here is a funny part , since when hotels report to TAT? There are no cancellations in mass as yet , however bookings have slowed down a bit in the past week. I think the moment violence breaks out, cancellations will start to roll in

wooloomooloo
Well here we go again. Time to stay away from Bangkok. Common sense is the order of day, diehard. My wife and I arrive in BKK in the next few days and will taxi ourselves to Don Mueang and return at end of holiday. We also require mid-holiday transit through Don Mueang and subsequent return. We'll reside at overnight hotel in Sukhumvit prior to departing our return to the UK in December and won't be socialising anywhere near explosive situations. If such arises, we'll relocate to relative safety. We have extensive travel insurance coverage and an awareness of our surroundings. Our safety, particularly that of my wife, is paramount. Though, we don't envisage any problems as things stand but retain an open mind. The FCO's current advice, I believe, doesn't invalidate our insurance. Gummigalgen
If all modes of transport were stopped TAT would announce 30 million swimmers arrive at the coast of Thailand for a holiday. Yep, and if the situation stabilizes again, as far as possible in Thailand, boats with Rohinya's pushed on the Andaman. That is outbound tourism designed in the 'war' room
