Need a little laptop help/repair

Recommended Posts

I have two lap tops. One an Apple the other is PC. I am having problems with playing DVDs on both. On the MacBook the problem is the DVD drive. On the PC laptop i don't know what it is. My first computer was a Mac and has been Mac ever since.. I am lost on a PC. I want to go someplace this afternoon and see what is wrong with the laptops or wrong with what I am doing on the PC. Any suggestions on where i can take them to?

Either Pantip or Icon Plaza, some of the guys in either of these places are wizards at fixing things and not too expensive.

I cant give you a shop name as normally the GF drops the affected (Or infected!) laptop off. My Thai speak is not that good and she seems to get the gist of what I say is wrong and thereby translated to the service person.

Id try these places first...good luck

just nuy an external dvd player for 600 thb and call it a day. The pirated dvds seem to cause a lot more wear on the heads.

What wear on what heads? DVD's use Laser! There is no physical connection between the disc and the reader.

I used to use "Goodspeed" at Pantip and for years they were excellent but last time, about 6 months ago they fiddled around and everything now comes up with Thai language when I go to file material or do any of a number of other tasks.

Took the laptop back 3 times and the guy willingly "fixed" the problem only to find that it goes back to Thai again after a couple of weeks. Yes, I KNOW we are living in Thailand but......

Another TV legal hair splitter......I'm talking about the movement of the optical eye to read the disc. Put a new hearing aid battery in, and you will be able to hear it working harder to read the non-licensed disc.

Anyway, google external usb dvd, and you will see a number of them under 20 US. Newegg had an LG and a Samsung.

But you can clean the Laser gently with a cotton bud, dipped in pure alchohol.

I agree but maybe the 'wear on the heads' poster has been imbibing the pure alchohol!

Or perhaps has a basic understanding of mechanics.

What understanding of mechanics? There is no mechanical interface between the disc and the (laser) reader. There are other mechanical interfaces involved in dvd drive motors etc, but not in the reading of the disc.

What understanding of mechanics?

A basic one, as I said.

There is no mechanical interface between the disc and the (laser) reader.

Nobody said that there was.

There are other mechanical interfaces involved in dvd drive motors etc, but not in the reading of the disc.

Nobody said anything about mechanical interfaces. Thighlander already gave you the explanation. It is the mechanical movement of the laser assembly that is the issue.

Moderator said it was OK to give this shop a plug. I was happy with their prompt and excellent service at reasonable cost:

Chiang Mai Notebook Service

Pantip Plaza 2nd floor Rm 2125

084 1511684 080 6723414

They work on all brands, Apple included.

Is It? Nobody said that and can't he fight his own corner?

He already DID fight his own corner:

"I'm talking about the movement of the optical eye to read the disc. Put a new hearing aid battery in, and you will be able to hear it working harder to read the non-licensed disc"

I just joined in for fun.
