steveb6 Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Anyone have experience with TURP surgery for an enlarged prostrate? Having serious problem with urinary retention and it looks like I have no choice but to have it done. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
d2g Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 TURP surgery has been replaced with a "green laser" procedure. It is safer and has better recovery time. Bumrungrad has the ability to do this. Go to Bumrungrad web site and follow menu to Urology.
Sheryl Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 TURP is still in fact sometimes done, but there are now a wide range of other options though not all are suitable for a given patient. I assume since you do not mention cancer that it is benign? First line of treatment is always medical, with drugs. Surgery to be considered only after all available drug therapies have failed, have they been exhausted? If surgery is called for ,there are multiple types, many of them less invasive than TURP. See here for an overview http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/prostate-gland-enlargement/DS00027/DSECTION=treatments-and-drugs Suggest you consult Dr. Viroj at Bumrungrad bringing all test results with you for a thorough discussion of how best to proceed. even if you cannot afford treatment at Bumrungrad it is worth the consult. There is an unfortunate tendency in Thailand for doctors not to want to admit that they cannot do something/offer a particular procedure, you need to make sure the choice of therapy is not being dictated by that but rather by your specific needs.
