Which Internet Browser Do You Use?...Some Browser Stats

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Safari for normal browsing (it's wicked fast), Firefox and once in a while Chrome for work (for FireBug and similar tools plus compatibility testing). I don't like Chrome, too many problems regarding flash content. Also had situations where jQuery plugins had problems coexisting together in Chrome. And to be honest, I'm not too fond of Google getting more of my life than necessary. It's enough that they scan my gmail and use my search queries for marketing purposes. Same reason my next phone will be an iPhone, not an Android one.

I agree on the Chrome problem with the flash player. Apparently there are 2 copies of flash loaded. One by Chrome and one by the system. If these are are not identical, Chrome frequently crashes. Even if they are the same, or if one is disabled, it still crashes. However, in the last month or so, the crashes are a lot less frequent. Mayble Google and/or Adobe has/have finally fixed or at least alleviated the problem.

I don't use gmail because of the privacy issue. However, I do use the Google search engine because it works better. If they look at at my search queries, so be it. I think that all search apps will probably analyze my query history for marketing purposes, anyhow.

Suggestion to Pib,the originator of this thread. Why not start another thread on favorite email apps, and why?

If you want to hide your search history use duckduckgo.

As an interesting "sub-topic" (i.e. quote this in your reply) please can web developers/builders say what they are using and why. Might be interesting.

For me it is Firefox without a doubt. Used Chrome for a while but felt that there adoption of CSS3 was piecemeal enough to put them down near iE and their attitude to security is too lax. Firefox needs to be maintained but I know I won't drive a car that I haven't checked the oil, tyre pressures, window cleaner reservoir, radiator, etc for my own safety. Comparing the amount of time I drive a car compared to how much time I spend online I really feel that routine browser maintenance is going to give you the best results and is a prudent measure. Chrome is all too Toyota for my liking whilst Firefox is Skoda and I am have been on maintenance courses and listen to the best mechanics in the game for advice. I drive cautiously and expect other users to be disrespectful, distracted and dangerous.

For the record I use google apps for business so I do like the integration in Chrome, but it is not enough to convince me I should use it for my regular habits. I just open it up to write the exception code for it and I notice that my newer sites are needing more Chrome exception codes than iE!!!

Last night when YouTubing using Chrome I experienced this flash player problem where some Youtube videos would not open up to full screen...instead they would just go to large screen size with an orientation on the left side of the screen. The Normal and Large screen modes worked find; just the full screen mode would not work on "some" videos. So I did some googling regarding the full screen issue and came up with bunch of links talking the problem. Fortunately for me it was a simple fix, which was disabling the Flash Player plugin in the Chrome folders and just using the Flash Player in Windows folders. Turns out both Flash Player plugins installed were the exact same and latest version of the Flash Player. Maybe Chrome just gets confused with two plugins telling it which Flash Player file(s) to go load.

Anyway I deactivated the Flash Player plugin in the Chrome folder and problem fixed. I loaded some of the videos that would not go to full screen before and now they would....I checked about a half dozen more videos and they all expanded to full screen. I went to bed. The next day/just a few minute ago I went to YouTube and played 10 videos and they would all open to full screen no problem.

Here are two links describing how to deactivate one of the Flash Players if you happen to have more than one loaded....high probability you do have two loaded because other programs, like other browsers such IE, use the Flash Player but they use the one that gets loaded in the Windows folders. In the first link below it indicates you may be asked to downloaded the latest Flash Player after deactivating the Flash Player in the Chrome folders but this probably won't occur if you have the "lastest" version of the Flash Player already loaded in the Windows folders.

And as FYI I even deactived the Flash Player plugin in Windows folders and activated the one in the Chrome folders and that also fixed the YouTube full screen problem...but then I went back and deactivated the one in the Chrome folders and and activated the one in the Windows folders as recommended.

A couple of Links describing the multiple Flash Player issue with Chrome and how to resolve it. Link 1. Link 2.

still using dos.....too old to change now......

If that's what you like, OK,more power to you. However, you are missing most of the exciting features the internet can bring you. DOS is an operating system, like Windows, and not a browser. I converted, kicking and screaming, from DOS to Windows around 2000 when Windows 2000 came out. I can still, even today, execute the DOS commands from the Command Prompt window which I keep linked in my Windows Start menu. I still use this feature occasionally. I am not exactly a spring chicken (84+) but I like to keep up with latest technologies, except for Facebook and Twitter. But that's another story.

I just hope piston broke still ain't running DOS 1.0...hopefully he's up one of the higher DOS versions. tongue.png

I would like to use chrome al the time as it does seem faster and cleaner however withe the recent bad press from Google and the dirty ness in bypassing iOS Safari security so they could track you even though you explicitly told them not to who know what Google is doing under the hood in Chrome but for sure they are doin something

Here's a layman's review of 10 browsers by TopTenReviews. Link. Results presented in an easy to understand comparison chart format.

The link should open showing the "Overall Rating" of the browsers...and then under the column titled "Rating" you can click the different categories/sublinks of Overall Rating, Feature Set, Security, Speed & Compatibility, Ease of Use, and Help & Support to see how each browser ranked in those categories.

Chrome, FireFox, and IE were Overall ranked as 1, 2, 3, respectively, but as you will see the scores for these three browsers on a scale from 1 to 10 with 9-10 being excellent and 8-9 being good where in the 8 to 10 area...or said another way all three browsers pulled good to excellent ratings in various categories. Or maybe said another way, all three are very good browsers (not to imply the other browsers aren't good also).

Only Chrome , it's much more stable than IE:

Only problem with Chrome is that they are owned by Google.

Yes when I use Chrome I can't open Kickass torrent and gets following message:

Oops! Google Chrome could not find www.kickasstorrents.com[/background]
Try reloading: www.kickasstorrents.com

No problem when using IE and this is my favorite Torrent site.

Also the page(s) isn't as sharp as IE's is.

So Chrome is OUT on my PC.

I just tried it with Chrome and IE and couldn't reach it...then tried Chrome and IE via VPN (a U.S. IP address) and got the same negative result. I'm on a True cable plan.

Still talking about the kickasstorrents site?

The dns does not resolve at all, at least on ipv4. Whois information lacks ISP ip-range. I tried from Thailand and from Singapore.

I guess the one who have it working with IE have got an extra passenger (extension or virus) with IE, which resolves the name to ip without contacting the defined name servers.. That's a point I would be very worried about the browser behavior.

For me I've never used the site...I'm not a torrents person...just attempted to connect so I could give some feedback to those who do want to use the site.

Chrome, but somehow is messed up with ThaiVisa, [AMD 8 core and Win 8] so forced to use FF or I.E, both painfully slow and only ever use on here, if FF times out many times then try I.E.

Always try Chrome 1st and yes opens the moment I click on it, just many functions do not/will not work.. posted these problems in Fourm Support [cannot sign in. cannot post and so on]

Being Dylexic is a pain in FF cannot find a spell checker, so have to write everything in Word, or rather what I use Kingsoft writer, then copy and paste

I had IE as my default browser for years but changed to Chrome for ease of use.

Microsoft had it all. Their browser was bundled in with every Windows operating system sold - they should be triumphant but as usual, they snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

IE from 9 onward has just been a total nightmare. Virtually unusable. Warnings about this, warnings about that. Continually prompting to disable add-ons, slow page loading, won't load messenger avatars on FB . . . i could go on but you get the picture.

Chrome has just got it so freakin' right.

Does it matter what OP system you are using?

I'm still on XP and using FireFox ...

No idea if it matters, on old AMD PC running Win 7 had no problems, or the AMD before useing Vista, just building this PC using a FX 8320 AMD 8 core CPU + Win 8, had problems with ThaiVisa in Chrome, all other sites are fine with Chrome and very fast, so must be something to do with what I am using ? FF is so painfully slow is that someing to do with the OS system ?

Ditto - XP + Firefox + 92 extensions.

Soon I'm going to pony up and buy Win7.

But the old computer ... bless her soul, while it can cope with it ... might need an upgrade.

Currently, I upgraded and now running 2 gig of DDR2 RAM .. and the processor ... well, don't ask .. it would embarrass me.

Win8, from what I've read is in the same crap bucket as Vista ... true?

I tried Win 7 for two months. bah.gif You can check what they stripped out of XP to make the more secure, faster, prettier Win 7 (that was a joke, by the way) in Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_features_removed_in_Windows_7

AND

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_features_removed_in_Windows_Vista

Of course, most computer newbies don't even know what they're missing. But I do. So I can't see me ever going back to Win 7 or 8, 9, 10...

I do know some one who is interested in DDR2 RAM, by the way - his power supply blew up and took out two of the RAM sticks. biggrin.png But I think he's going to get his fixed fairly quickly, so there's little point in trying to come to "an arrangement" laugh.png
