BKK-Chiang Mai train

Featured Replies

Does anyone know when the BKK-Chiang Mai over-night trains start running again. I am looking to take the kids from BKK to Chiang Mai around the first week of January.

Thanks

State Railroad of Thailand is saying December 1 at the earliest.

Anyone heard anymore about this? How far south of Chiang Mai do you have to go to get on the train?

Well if it is open I would imagine you can get on it at the Chiang Mai train station.

If not it would not be a Chiang Mai to Bangkok train.

then again strange things do happen.

The train from Bangkok is ending at Uttaradit. 240 km south of Chiang Mai.

I don't think I would let my kids ride on a Thai train, 18 derailments since the first of the year.

Thats why they now have a new track ,so it should be safe when finished .The new track looks very solid with concrete sleepers .

The sleepers may be concrete but what about the base.?

On another thread there was some pictures of it taken from the side and it was not level more rolling.

I have a little experiance with base work and it is not that hard to get it level. On the other hand maybe it is OK to be rolling. I can understand that but not when it is new ant the ups and downs are so short.

At least they are slow motion derailments, as opposed to 100+ km/h bus and mini bus crashes.

I'd still opt for the train over road transport any day, well I would if it was open !!
