More rain, wind forecast over flooded South

BANGKOK: -- THE FLOOD situation in many parts of southern Thailand is improving, but now Deputy Interior Minister Visarn Techateerawat is warning southerners of another challenge - the influence of cyclonic storm Lehar due tomorrow and Friday.

Following continuous rain, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla and Surat Thani still need monitoring. Visarn said Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Cabinet members had instructed provincial governors to continue providing aid to affected people.

A storm-warning centre has been set up in Songkhla to monitor the situation. Storm Lehar is currently moving over the Bay of Bengal.

The Meteorological Department yesterday also forecast that more rain was likely in the South, with strong wind-driven waves up to 2-3 metres high in the Gulf.

The department also forecast cooler weather for upper Thailand during November 28-30.

In Trang, despite a previously built 1,000-sandbag back-up barrier, a section the Trang River in Na Ta Loung sub-district collapsed yesterday morning, flooding riverside homes in one-metre-deep water.

Most residents had been warned to move their belongings to higher ground and 60 soldiers with two GMC vehicles helped them evacuate. Some however lost belongings in the early morning flood.

Trang Governor Somsak Parisutho and Red Cross Society members delivered 300 relief sets to flood-affected residents in Na Yong district.
