People show support by handing over cash to Suthep

BANGKOK: -- Apart from addressing social issues, the People's Democratic Reform Committee led by former Democrat MP Suthep Thaugsuban has now started focusing on collecting donations.

During the march down Bangkok yesterday, Suthep was seen waving to supporters, accepting cash donations and putting them in a bag carried by his aide. He often returned the favour by posing for photographs and signing autographs.

Though the PDRC has marched through Bangkok's busy streets several times, it has managed to keep things cheerful and colourful. On Thursday, a troupe of cabaret dancers and lion dancers also joined in - all armed with whistles, of course.

Suthep set off with his supporters from Democracy Monument to the Asoke area on Thursday morning, calling on the general public to take part in the mass protests tomorrow. However, instead of offering to join the march, many supporters preferred to hand over cash.

These cash donations began after the Department of Special Investigation decided to freeze the bank accounts of 18 protest leaders. Through cash handed over at the march and via other means, Suthep managed to collect Bt600,000 in donations on Thursday alone.

Observing the rally, @Suloveboss tweeted: "Whoa! This is clearly a top-up mob. People hand over Bt20, Bt50, Bt100, Bt1,000 banknotes all the way at almost every minute. "

Another woman was seen holding up a banner that read: "I am pretty and rich and have come to top up money for Uncle Kamnan [suthep]." She, along with two of her friends, had travelled to Silom from Phaholyothin to donate cash directly to PDRC leaders. "I have already donated drinking water and money at the rally sites. But today I want to add a little more, as Uncle Kamnan's accounts have been frozen," she said.

Likewise, protester Satawan Inthasa said she had travelled from Ekamai to Silom so she could hand cash over to Suthep in person. She said she had raised Bt10,000 for him so far.

While the march seemed lively, some bystanders did not seem that pleased. Many shop owners, such as tailors, rice retailers and pharmacists, on Silom Road said they wanted to remain neutral and not offer donations or join the Sunday march because their work was more important.

Another shop owner, who asked not to be named, said his business was being affected because not many customers could come to his store while the protesters were marching.

A tailor, who preferred to remain anonymous, said this protest was hurting his business very badly, adding that he was still recovering from the 2011 floods and the red-shirt protests in 2010.

Yet some people are keeping optimistic, saying such setbacks are a sacrifice they are willing to make in order to uproot a corrupt regime.

"Thank you dear protesters, and now go ahead and die for me already, I won't care, as long as you gimme money and I get into power again"

In reality, he won't win because Thaksin has way more money and can buy his votes by a million times.... wai2.gif wai2.gifwai2.gif

This is all a consequence of Tarit freezing bank accounts which in all probability he had no legal right to do.

There was never people coming out and making donations like this before, nor did I see anywhere that they were asked to do so.

There have been those in the past who have provided free food, water and medical help out of there own pockets but never cash like this.

There have also if what I hear is correct, been those who have paid for free transport to get people to BKK, out of their own pockets, hence one of Tarits rants that he will go after any bus or van company that has provided transport.

Another large crap in his own nest from the controller.

Court already ruled the blocking of the accounts wasillegal. Police didn't even (officially) ask a judge to give the order, so they fabricated some silly papers themselves. Next will be a formal complaint against the ones that fabricated/ordered it.

That should end the accusations, that this present protest has been paid for by the Bangkok Elite. I guess the man from Dubai, had better get his wallet out, nobody in their right mind,is going to give him the price of a cup of coffee!

So you don't consider the women holding the sign saying , I am pretty and rich and here to give uncle Suthep money a BKK elite? Just another poor rice farmer supporting him eh?

Did they get a receipt and will he ever produce a balance sheet to show how the money was used ?

Sorry, it's early morning and I'm not in my body yet or I wouldn't be quite so silly.

No that's all right, in a democracy you would have to declare, Thailand is a democracy isn't it.???

What it proves is that support is coming from all sectors.

But I shouldn't really be feeding the trolls

Holding a sign on camera saying you are here in give him money is dangerous these days, look behind you as Tarit is sneaking up.

Saying you are pretty is ok unless it's a complete lie of course but Tarit hasn't threatened that, yet.

If everyone hands him their cash now, he can go home and really retire.

Watching the Australian news and they say there were an estimated 15K protestors, not a bad days wages for Suthep.

Nice one DSI.

You just pulled the protesters closer together.

Reminds me a bit of the South African sanctions against apartheid.

All it did was make the country more self sufficient and stronger to the point it had the strongest economy in the whole continent.

When you add quotation marks as you have done above, you imply that these are his words.

You should be thankful that it is Suthep and not Thaksin, as there is no doubt that the latter would have people hunting you down for such defamation...!

It's also now going to make it totally impossible to round up all of those who have provided financial support to the protests

Nevertheless, given the arrogance of the man in Dubai, no doubt he will be telling Tarit to obtain photographic evidence of anyone making such donations and ordering their arrest...!!
