An ordinary Thai's impression of us Westerners.

Featured Replies

The other day i was at immegration ,on leaving the wife and i stopped at a cart to get somtam ect ,anyway the old lady there started a conversation with the wife ,it was obvious she was talking about me (my Thai is limited)

asking the wife what she had said ,she said that the old lady had asked how long we had been married and said that i looked very smartwink.png unlike most of the foreigners that she saw who were low class and looked terrible ,the way they dressed and all the tattoo's they had and on the whole looked scruffy and dirty .

Now i was only wearing a shirt and trousers ,but i was quite shocked that a woman who was obviously not very well off and working selling food from a cart had such a low opinion of us westerners . Do you think its what most of them think ,? sad.png

Was this pressed trousers and pressed shirt?

She may have had a different perception had she known the real you and your spelling abilities.

You were wearing trousers (hopefully with shoes as well), sets you apart from the rest.

Who gives a toss.

Obviously the Thais do...

The subject of how Thais think of us has been beaten to death on these forums and as one poster says "Who gives a toss". lol It's HER opinion.

I no longer care what they think of us. I care more about what i think of them....not very much to be honest.

They also care about magic holes that appear in the ground and the opinions and happiness of ghosts.

Judging by the opinions given on here ,i can see why immegrants to Britain act as they do ,if they also think like that ,they do not care what we think ,they just do what pleases them .

She's judging only by superficial appearances. Any fool can wash up and put on some long pants. I judge this vendor to be not a deep thinker.

Thais see foreigners as "Walking Wallets"

Thais see foreigners as "Walking Wallets"

In that case, if those wallets are lacking in power, then you don't want to know what some Thais might think of us!

Thais see foreigners as "Walking Wallets"

Only if you are dumb enough to let yourself be seen as such.

So in other words, you look scruffy. No suprise there then.

This must be a first, a Pattaya snob.

If dressing properly and not looking like a tramp makes me a snob, then I'm in!

OP writes:

"she said that the old lady had asked how long we had been married and said that i looked very smart unlike most of the foreigners that she saw who were low class and looked terrible ,the way they dressed and all the tattoo's they had and on the whole looked scruffy and dirty ."

-Ask yourself then if the foreigners are so bad why does the immigration allow them to stay so long in Thaland?

And by the way OP I think your topic is designed to flame!

External appearance is very important to most Thais--especially the elderly. They do not really like or appreciate shorts and t-shirts, prefering to dress in what most of us consider to be extremely uncomfortable clothing. Thais, in general, are extemely conservative, which probably seems to be an odd statement for farangs who have never lived in the countryside. There are way too many disgusting, revolting, violence-loving, sick-in-the-head farangs in Pattaya-Jomtien that are giving the rest of us a bad reputation--many have shaved heads and loads of tatooes that make them look like they just escaped from prison. At best, I think most Thais see us as "strange outsiders" w/ "money." The girls tend to see us as walking ATM machines.

Some Thais will like Farangs some will not, that's the way it is

It is the same in any country where different races live together

I dont think she had a low opinion about westerners. To me it was more like expressing how those foreigners look that she gets to see the most.

Oh come on Jingthing, i am sure you if not a deep thinker are at least an intelligent person ,judging by your posts ,even you must admit that half the dross that hangs around Pattaya look as if they were just released from a prison . doesnt it make you a little ashamed that even a poor working class Thai woman who has very little looks down on a large percentage of westerners here?

It was not that she didn't like us it was just she had a low opinion of how many dressed and behaved.

Ashamed of what? Pattaya? I'm just an international type person living here. I am not Pattaya. I am not white people. I am just me and I'm not ashamed of myself. I can't control what some Thai lady vendor thinks about anything, and no I do not care one little bit what she thinks about white people. Do you think she cares what I might think about Thai people in my home country? Yes indeed there are some scary looking people in Pattaya, Thai and international, probably more than the standard. Good people watching!

Who gives a toss.

Well I certainly do, as would anyone else with the slightest pride in their appearance.

I cannot understand how anyone can go to a restaurant in a singlet, what is the harm of throwing on a comfortable dress shirt?

It’s a sad fact that the worst dressed people in Bangkok and Pattaya are foreigners.

Old Blue Eyes would spin in his grave if he could see some of the scruffs (tramps) that pound the street of Thailand (and I am not talking about Thais).

Wouldn't you expect the Thai street vendor to be sweet talking her customers (your wife)? I doubt the vendor would have told your wife what she really thought of you.

No ,i think she was just commenting that so few westerners dress nicely (and if dressing decently makes me a snob ,then so be it ) personally i do not like when i am in the UK seeing women in Burkas or men dressed in robes ,when in Rome ect)

Do street vendors dress nicely? I can't say I've ever observed what they wear.

.... it wouldn't take much to beat long pants and thongs though.biggrin.png

Many farangs are a bit underdressed, slobs or just look like bad news. I have also heard Thais commenting on the way farangs look. I don't really care but I would not want many of them dating my sister or hanging out at my house. To each his own but I prefer people who take a little pride in the way they look and act.
