Hollywood Movie ‘The Coup’ Starts Filming in Phetchaburi

Phetchaburi: -- Hollywood superstars Pierce Brosnan, Owen Wilson and Lake Bell were in Phetchaburi, central Thailand today to continue filming the upcoming movie thriller The Coup – And Thaivisa got an exclusive peek at the set of the movie!

The Coup, which tells the story of a young family who relocate from America to South East Asia only to find themselves caught up in the middle of a violent revolution. As the situation intensifies and as foreigners around them are being imprisoned and executed, the family is soon forced to seek refuge. Wilson and Bell play the roles of the America husband and wife, while Pierce Brosnan is the heroic government official.

The Coup is directed by John Erick Dowdle and is being produced in part by the Thai based production company Living Films, which also facilitated in the production of the blockbuster movie Hangover 2.

The Coup, which is due to be released sometime in 2014 (official release date still to be confirmed) has been filmed in various locations throughout Thailand including Chiang Mai and more recently in Lampang, where the filming had to be temporarily halted due a fire on the set which caused considerable damage to filming equipment.

This weekend, as filming continued, it was the turn of Phetchaburi to take centre stage as the cast and production team descended on the picturesque town, which saw its town centre and famous riverbank transformed into a scene straight out of 1960’s Saigon.

I saw Owen Wilson at Nana Plaza about a week ago, looked like he was picking up his own extras.

If they did a movie about Thai coups, they'd be no problems with producing endless sequels.

Could it be that the movie is set in Vietnam and the Vietnamese didn't give permission to film there? Or it's easier to film in LOS?

I think you read the other post on TV that they are paying the farang extras 2,000 baht a day while the Thais get 700 baht.

Like all Hollywood movies, short on reality, long on rah, rah, USA forgetting most coups were supported or caused by the CIA.

But I am sure it will be a fun well produced movie. The reason I think it is being shot here is Thailand has a well developed

and excellent film industry. Anyone who has watched just the coming features in the theatre can see the comedy films

are really funny. Genuinely surprised they have not been dubbed and released in western countries.

Subject matter, no doubt. VN censors subject matter just like its SE Asian neighbor countries. But it is also likely to be a matter of cinema infrastructure since Siam has film crews and production support greater than any of its neighbors.

At least they got the pedi-cabs right, with the driver in back rather than Thai style where you have a sweaty smelly driver's ass in your face.

What they can't edit out are the right-hand drive cars of dubious origin. These are not the kinds of cars on the streets of Saigon in the 1960s, certainly not right-hand drive.

Their idea of MACV is way off. It looked nothing at all like they have depicted. It was rather a modern sprawling complex of concrete buildings not unlike a school campus or a corporate headquarters.

Maybe in Sweden but not in Saigon in the 1960s. Phone service was horrible, very hit and miss. Phone lines were isolated or in pairs even in Saigon and you never saw tangles of licorice spaghetti that is commonplace in LOfS.

Ridiculous statement. Parts of both the Quiet American and Indochine (French film) were shot on location in Vietnam. I'm sure if the plot of the film is seen as being critical of the country or the government, the producers would not get permission to shoot there, but that has nothing to do with the government being communist. Many non-communist countries would respond the same way. Not defending, just saying.

Go see if you can shoot a film critical of Putin and/or the orthodox church in Russia, for instance. Or try something similar in Singapore...

Funny how they are filming about a coup when the country they are in is potentially on the verge of having one. I wonder if it helps for the actor inspiration.

"Most coups were supported or caused by the CIA"? Please provide some sort of data to support the most theory. "Most" is such a vague word. Perhaps the word "Many" could be a possible substitute. It doesn't sound as definite as the former.
