Thailand to Host World's Tallest New Year's Eve Ball Drop
By JOANNA PRISCO via GOOD MORNING AMERICA

"This is an opportunity for Thailand to join the likes of other countries, and have an iconic New Year's celebration all its own," said Lebua Hotels and Resorts CEO Deepak Ohri. "The golden top of the Dome, the Tower Club's signature dining destination, has been a long-time icon of Bangkok's skyline. The ball drop, which is set to become an annual event, is now poised to be another."

From the link...

The ball will descend 15 meters....

So each floor at Lebua is less than 25cm high, yes?

What time will it drop?

Not sure as Suthep has stated there will not be a 2014 until his demands are met. He vowed to disrupt the celebrations and cancel 2014.

Is there anything that isnt copied in Thailand?

Freedom of speech ;)

Now, they just need ACDC, there, for New Years Eve, singing "I've got big balls"

As for timing...well, if it's like anything else in Thailand, they will probably drop it at 1am, at the earliest.

Around 1am or shortly after, if the ceremony is not disrupted by the Demonstrators! cheesy.gif

1998:

In Thailand 6 Buddhist worshippers were killed and dozens injured when 3 giant ceremonial incense sticks collapsed at the Phra Pathom Pagoda.

1999:

World No Tobacco Day got off to with a bang in Thailand when a 10-metre long mock cigarette exploded at an anti-smoking rally in Bangkok, singeing the eyebrows and hair of several people on stage, though no-one was seriously hurt.

2013:

Reuters, 1st January 2014.

Thailand’s bid to becoming the world's hub for dropping balls derailed last night (BST) after the 1.2 ton ball ...............................................................

The pretend Prime Minister of (parts of) Thailand was not available for comment (again).

What time will it drop?

Don't be so flippant. Surely its more important to know what time it lands!

My balls droppped years ago ,there was never a celebration .

In what other places than TSNY do they drop a ball to usher in the new year? Not counting copies, I mean a tradition of say 50 years or more?

On a side note, now that Bangkok is fully staffed and run by Indians, is it safe to go to Hong Kong again?

My balls droppped years ago ,there was never a celebration .

Good one. clap2.gif

these idiots dropped the ball years ago cheesy.gif

Have to laugh really,

Copy Xmas, shops adorned with baskets Trees, trimmings, I asked Tesco customer services lady about it all she said It is not a Thai thing and she and her family and friends do not get involved--she said because she is not Christian.

New year, same same, she said it is not Thai new year.

In the UK do we celebrate big style other religions festivals,

Here it's not their thing but they do it.----in the big stores all the Xmas and new year stuff crammed with it, and for a hand full of farrangs

For a moment I thought it was going to drop it's prices, however I see now that it's only the ball being dropped.

Is there anything that isnt copied in Thailand?

Good sense and logic to name two ?
