BANGKOK: -- Most people feared that “Bangkok Shutdown” could lead to violence and that the country's economy will be negatively affected.

In the latest survey on the people’s reaction to the People’s Democratic Reform Committee’s (PDRC) threat of the January 13 Bangkok Shutdown, conducted by Suan Dusit Poll, it revealed that more than half of the people feared violence could break out and that could hurt the economy.

The survey was made between Jan 2-4 among nearly 1,200 residents in Bangkok and its adjacent provinces on “What do they think about the ‘Bangkok Shutdown’ by the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC)” which will start from Jan 13.

The survey showed that 54.09% admitted that they were concerned that violence may occur and that the economy would be affected, while 45.91% believed that the mass demonstrations will be peaceful and the caretaker government would be able to handle the situation.

It also revealed 73.25% feared that the situation could intensify and lead to confrontation or intervention by third party to incite political violence.

Meanwhile 47.12% urged all parties to think about national interest and to have consciousness and reasons.

Another 41.55% called on protesters to hold peaceful rallies and to respect the laws.

This is a poll? None of this information is news to the people who live here. Many of us are worried sick about this mess. Third parties? What third parties? They are extensions of the two sides of the Puppet Show, and everyone knows it. The media is all smoke and mirrors, just like the West. Regrettably, we have taught them some nasty tricks.

I wish all the monks in Thailand would have a Day of Prayer for peace. It could not possibly hurt. Mind is powerful. I wish they would use it, and I mean all people on all sides.

Yea know, after being here in Thailand for over 22 years (this time) and never left, I hope suthep does bring Bangkok to a stop and the counrty loose billions. I am sorry for saying that as I do love Thailand. But that will be the only way to stop suthep premently. When he wins, wich I hope he doesn't, he will turn Thailand into a dictatorship with him as the dictator.

I agree 100%

If Jatuporn gets his way there will be a third side dressed in red shirts. A side with an on going record of violence being led by the court jester in Court Thaksin.wai.gif

One guess how Vladimir Putin would handle the Mr. Suthep problem ....

I don't thing Putin has a court jester with a mob of thugs with a history of violence at his beck and call. Also his check book.

so how would he handle it? Joseph Stalin style comes to mind.

Are you kidding he has been here for 22 continuous years. He knows every thing.

Well almost every thing. He dosen't know where that link is. He has misplaced it. A senior moment quite common when one ages. Especially when there is none. Now I am not saying that one can not be produced by taking things out of context which seems to be the big attraction to Thaksin supporters. Take things out of context and indicate that they mean some thing else.

Of course they are standing with their feet firmly planted in mid air. But it makes them happy. Never mind the fact that the government has admitted that they will lie if it makes people happy and that it is OK to do that.cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

Jeez! The issue is Thailand, people. Who gives a rat's rectum for all these posts that keep popping up referring to Hitler, Stalin, or whining about how this impacts on the USA / UK / Nevernever land. Thailand (the country that some of us have chosen to live in full-time) is tearing itself apart, blood is being shed, the economy sliding down the tubes faster than lastnight's curry and what do we have here?....a bunch of keyboard warriors having a big d--k contest.

What? Apparently you will just say anything without any basis whatsoever other than you wanting it to be true. Putin would have dispensed with Suthep before he made it into the streets. The FSB would have showed up at his house with machine guns and any businesses or assets would have been converted to state owned Putin controlled. I can provide many recent examples . . . Even the media source used to voice opposition in Russia was subject to hostile takeover by Putin. Pavel Durov escaped Russia the day before FSB showed up at VK with machine guns and Putin's right hand man mysteriously bought out Durov's two business partners so he could control VK.

This type of nonsense would not be permitted in any reasonable country. These people are not supressed and censored by some hard core dictator. Their businesses are not being taken by the government. They are not being starved or detained and physically abused or tortured by the police or state. This is more about childish fears of not getting one's way than preserving civil liberties and fundamental human rights.

Candidly, demonizing the reds is childish and ignorant. One cannot blame them for being upset when several hundred thousand apparently unemployed nonproductive members of Thai society clog the streets and cause financial harm to those honest hard working people trying to make a living.

The fact is Suthep and you whiners want violence and are trying to push this to violence. Then when you get what you seek, you whine more and throw stones. This situation just baffles me as an outsider looking in. Common sense, logic and rationale thought is utterly absent from the equation. Sounds like a grade school stand off logic between a couple of sixth graders.

Some truth in what you say my friend but what we think here on TVF doesn't make a satang of difference. And anyway its not possible to have a serious fact and historical based argument on TVF for various laws that inhibit free speech. This is Thailand at least it wont be as bad as Africa or South America - but if Suthep triumphs and pisses of the Yanks big time then all bets are off. Thailand's security and prosperity have been underwritten by the US for the last 50 years and have engorged the military and made them rich and powerful - it would ill behove them to rattle their cage now.

Interesting snippet in the story here... What do the other 52.88% think? No national interest?

Maybe they want better internet and free mobile phones.???

Meanwhile "the people" will win....

Me thinks you jest young man... I could only WISH that this became true.... We have (stupid) Politicians... not LEADERS

whistling.gif History from 2010 has taught the Red Shirts a lesson.

The lesson us ..... no one among the common people really pays much attention to politicians in Thailand until they burn down a building or two.

Then the rich clique of elite wealthy families that really runs Thailand and buys and sells the "Politicians" for the Thailand sham "Democracy and Elections" show will suddenly take notice.

That's the way change is made.

That's how it was done in 2010.

The Thai student protestors that want change have absorbed that lesson.

You can be sure there will be violence unless there is a change in the status quo that keeps them poor and benefits a few rich elite families.

And the elite do not want to give up their position of control.

Violence, if not now, certainly in the future, is inevitable.

The middle class which usually espouses such changes is NOT yet large enough. we have RICH elites on either ide vying for total control.. the 3rd class will be the middle class when it grows as it has been in all other major Wester nations where change and Democracy as we KNOW it occurs.

Solly Dolly but unfortunately Putin does have jesters (his PM) and a swag of money he steals.. He goaled Kordokovsky and TOOK Yukos Oil and gave it to Russoil which HIS wife owns 55% as i know the person who owns another 30%.

They are all tainted with the same tar brush.

Rob, none of us can solve or influence anyhthing going on here.

And Thailand is NOT going down the gurgler faster than a Somalian with a Maccas voucher.

Thailand has become stronger over the years and is no longer a 3rd world country but a B grade or should we state 2nd world nation. It is improving.

Yes i agree what is happening is very dismal indeed but we must wait for the PEOPLE to change it as Suthep and Thaksin Shin clan or reds or yellows or whites will not make any difference. SAME SAME. And Thailand will stll go o business as usual but maybe a bit moe relaxed.... slower...
