Police seek warrants for duo behind palace attack
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Arrest warrants will soon be obtained for two suspects believed to be behind a grenade attack on Bangkok's Suan Pakkad Palace - a property associated with Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra, who is also deputy Democrat leader.

The attack, which took place at around 21.44pm on Thursday night, hurt nobody but damaged a vehicle parked inside the six-rai compound. Some trees were also damaged.

Pol General Ake Angsananont said Friday that those responsible for this attack might have also been responsible for the grenade attack on Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva's home on Tuesday.

"Behavioural patterns and the type of grenades used in both cases are similar," Ake, a deputy national police chief, said.

So far, the two assailants on a motorbike have not been identified as they were both wearing safety helmets, though there is camera footage of them entering the area. Ake went on to say that the request for arrest warrants was being processed through the Criminal Court.

He added that the pin for the US-made M-26 grenade used in the attack was also found at the scene, though the serial number on it had been scraped off. Footage shows the man sitting on the pillion seat lobbing the grenade in a military-like fashion.

Ake added that both the military and the police use these grenades.

Meanwhile, Suan Pakkad Palace located on Ayutthaya Road was open to visitors as usual Friday. The property, which serves as a museum, is owned Sukhumbhand's relatives.

Protesting farmers block highway in Phichit province

farmers-block-road-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- About 3,000 farmers from five central and lower northern provinces have blocked the Asian highway in Phichit province on Friday to demand payments of their rice crops from the government.

The farmers from Phichit, Nakhon Sawan, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanuloke and Sukhothai marched through the Asian highway between Nakhon Sawan and Phitsanuloke before they settled in front of a branch of Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives at Po Sai Ngam intersection in Phichit’s Bung Narang district where they set up a protest stage.

The blockade has completely shut down traffic on both sides of the highway, causing inconvenience to many motorists and commuters who were unaware of the farmers’ protest.

Protest leaders warned that if the farmers could not get the payments which have been delayed for more than three months the protesters would escalate their project.

During the protest, the protesters burned an effigy of caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra accusing her of being insincere to farmers.

Police reinforcements have been dispatched to the scene to redirect the stranded motorists to the other roads.

Fruit prices likely to increase during Chinese New Year

PNSOC570117001011301_17012014_053531.jpg

TRANG, 17 January 2014 (NNT) – An inspection in Trang’s fresh markets has indicated that fruit may see an increase in prices during the upcoming Chinese New Year.

Fruit vendors at the fresh market in Trang province have been providing a wide selection of various types of fruit to cater to the needs of consumers, especially with the Chinese New Year drawing near, when customers often shop for fruit for ceremonial occasions, such as oranges, watermelons, dragon fruits, pears, guavas and longans, of which the prices at the moment are in line with the general market. However, the prices may hike prior to the upcoming Chinese New year.

Oranges, which are selling at 80 baht per kilo, will probably see a hike of another 10 baht; dragon fruit costs 80-90 baht per kilo; pears 25 baht per kilo; grapes 150 baht per kilo; watermelons 25 baht per kilo, and longan 90-100 baht per kilo. The Increase will be approximately 5-10 baht per kilogram.

In Trang, consumer spending is quite low at the moment possibly due to the sluggish economy and the drop in rubber and palm oil prices.

Novel way to tackle loan sharks proposed

BANGKOK: The Fiscal Policy Office (FPO) is to ask for advice from the Election Commission (EC) on a possibility of allowing the setting up of small credit companies to solve the problem of private debts arising from lending by loan sharks.

The plan is an innovative way of tackling loan sharking, which has always been robustly resistant to enforcement. Instead, the idea is to turn loan sharks – or some of them, at least – into registered microlending companies.

FPO Director General Somchai Satjapong revealed that his office had already raised the issue to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Kittiratt Na Ranong, who supported the scheme.

But, Mr Somchai explained, the plan needs prior approval from the EC. If the response is positive, the FPO can start the project without waiting for the formation of a new government.

He believes that the move would be able to deal with illegal money-lending “to a certain degree”.

Under the scheme, “unlicensed creditors” – the polite name for loan sharks – would be allowed to register as a juristic person and set up a small-time credit company providing loans to the general public.

The FPO Director General said believed that the project would interest loan sharks, adding that commercial banks would be able to join the scheme on the conditions that the companies they set up would not be allowed to accept deposits, and must not offer loans exceeding B100,000 per borrower.

No mention was made of the interest rates that might be charged by the new companies.

PCAD Halts Ballot Papers Printing

By Khaosod English.

BANGKOK: -- Anti-government protesters have forced publishers of ballot papers to close down.

Approximately 100 supporters of the People′s Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD) marched to the governmental publishing house on Lad Phrao Road earlier today, where they proceeded to cut off the power and water supply into the building.

PCAD has demanded that general election on 2 February 2014 be cancelled in order to pave way for the establishment of an unelected ′People′s Council′, whose members would be selected by PCAD leadership, to rule Thailand as a transitional government.

The government has so far refused to postpone or cancel the election, and PCAD protesters have vowed to do everything they can to prevent the election from taking place.

The protesters also entered the publishing house and instructed officials there to leave, causing the director of the printing operation to temporarily close down the venue.

Officials were eventually ordered to go home for their own safety.

The publishing house is under the supervision of Office of the Welfare Promotion Commission for Teachers and Educational Personnel (OTEP), and it is the sole agency tasked with the printing of ballot papers for 2 February election.
