Non-Extremists are Reaching a Consensus
By Cod Satrusayang and S.P. Somtow

BANGKOK: -- On politics, the two authors of this piece have not always agreed with one another but there was always a mutual respect and a willingness to understand and listen. Sadly this does not seem to apply to society at large. It is a time of belligerence and self-advocacy with people unable (or perhaps unwilling to reach across the aisle. Thus in the true spirit of reconciliation the following article was penned with each author addressing his own perceived side.

Police deny posting naval officer's photo and links him to bomb suspect

A senior police officer Monday denied that police investigators linked an officer of the Naval Special Warfare Command to the suspect in Sunday's Victory Monument grenade attack.

Pol Maj Gen Wicharnwat Borirakkul, commander of Metropolitan Police Division 6, said police were not behind the distribution of the naval officer on social networks and linked him to the bomb suspect.

He issued the denial after Naval Special Warfare Commander Rear Adm Winai Klom-in threatened to sue the Royal Thai Police for damaging his agency's reputation.

State bank affirms no loans being allocated for govt for rice scheme
By English News

BANGKOK, Jan 20 -- The president of Thailand's state-owned Government Savings Bank (GSB) affirmed today that there will be no loans to be allocated to the government for its rice pledging scheme amid mounting concerns on widespread farmer protests for delayed payment.

Protest leader Thaworn Senneam from the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) said he had met with Government Saving's Bank president Worawit Chailimpamontri after anti-government protesters at the Victory Monument protest site marched to the bank's headquarters on Phaholyothin Road.

Protesters later cut electricity to the building after the discussion took place for only a while. Only PDRC leaders, guards and reporters were allowed inside the building.

A press conference was made after the discussion. Mr Worawit said the bank would not provide loans to the caretaker government for the rice pledging scheme, for such a project is not conducted in accordance with its chartered objectives.

Mr Worawit insisted that the bank's liquidity is healthy and asked the public to rest assured of the bank's status. The GSB has more than 20 million customer accounts and has about 5 million accounts taking loans from the bank, he noted.

Protest leader Thaworn, meanwhile, said that rice pledging is a populist policy that leads to corruption and vote buying. The government should therefore not force state enterprises such as the GSB and the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Co-Operatives (BAAC) to provide loans for that purpose. (MCOT online news)

SUthep: Due to Thaksin's overwhelming power, they have done things to corrupt esp the rice pledging scheme.

Suthep: Popular policies were used to lure farmers, instead of giving them Bt15,000 per Kwian, only Bt10,500 was given

RT@Lerlaforever: Suthep: If Krung Thai Bank will lend money to the government, alert me I will visit their headquarter which is near the protest site.

RT@Lerlaforever: Suthep: THe only way government can get money for farmers is to sell all 18 million tons in stock

RT@Lerlaforever: Suthep: But due to monopoly they allowed to happen to make their people become sole seller, they couldn't clear rice in stocks,
