North Korea threatens nuclear war in response to joint US-South Korea drills

SEOUL: -- North Korea is threatening nuclear war in response to the scheduled joint military maneuvers between the US and South Korea. North Korea's increasing opposition to the annual joint drills (“Foal Eagle”) looks very similar to the reaction that preceded the start of the same exercises last year which led to a new stalemate on the Korean peninsula.

Government confident February 2 election will not be invalidated

phongthep-2-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The government is confident that the February 2 election will not be declared null and void if judicial organizations do their duty in a straightforward manner, said Deputy Prime Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana on Thursday.

He said that the Election Commission was duty-bound to stage elections in constituencies where there are problems so that there will be enough MPs to make up a quorum to enable the House to convene.

Mr Pongthep said he was not worried with all the petitions which were expected to be field with the Constitution Court or other courts to render the February 2 invalid.

He insisted that the Constitution Court had no jurisdiction to rule whether the election is void or not regarding this particular case about several election days instead of just one day.

Group demands resignation of Election Commissioner

BANGKOK: -- A group of 5,000 people have called for the resignation of Election (EC) Commissioner Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, accusing him of carrying out his duty without neutrality and attempting to destroy democracy.

Pinkaew Luangaramsri, lecturer at the Sociology and Anthropology Department, Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University led a group of 10 to submit an open letter bearing the signatures of 5,000 people to the Election Commission.

The letter stated that after the House was dissolved, Somchai had proposed to the government that it defer the election and asked the Constitutional Court to rule who had the authority to defer the election. The letter said the group would petition the Constitutional Court if the EC attempted to nullify the election.

Meanwhile Pheu Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit presented questions to the EC at the party headquarters. He asked why the EC thought only of postponing the election, never the condemned protest leaders who blocked the election, or asked them to stop blocking the election.
