on monday i will go and check them both out... but i just thought i'd ask,

anyone got any ideas?

Don't bother with the hospitals in Satahip. They are government hospitals and the equipment is old. As far as i'm concerned their is only one hospital in Pattaya BPH. Now their billing system is kind of wierd depending wheather you are a tourist or you work here, or retired. So the key is to register correctly. Tourists pay the highest rates, and Thais that are registered in Chonburi pay the lowest rates. everyone else pays the rates in between depending on your classification. So be sure to register correctly. For help see rayna in the international department. She is from the Philippines and is a great help.

I'm sure it won't apply in your case, but it is standard practice in Thailand for hospitals to refuse to release new born babies until the bills are paid.

Effectively kidnapping :o

So make sure you (i) get a written quote in advance;

and (ii) take your credit card or a wad of cash with you when you collect your family.

Hope all goes well. Good luck :D

Barry, Mobi, Many thanks for your advice lads, esp the written quotation bit, i wouldn't have thought of that... but as i'm finding out quickly.. you need stuff like that here in sunny thailand.

I will check BPH out and see Rayna,

I will also check out Sattahip Naval Hospital (?? have I got the right one?? near the airport??) as i have been told good stuff about it and also that it's a fraction of the cost... which is relevant at the moment... 80.000 cannot... 12.000 can..

thanks again Barry and Mobi, much appreciated.. first baby... new to Pattaya.

May the road rise up gently to meet you..

All the best,

Aaron.

Aaron,

Forget satahip Naval Hospital near the airport. True they are chaper, but if any complications arrive, they will be unable to handle it. BPH is the best hospital. Better to pay a little more in a hospital with all the latest equipment.

Please let us know what Rayna tells you about payment scales, as I would be interested in comparing notes... :o

Check out the hospitals in Sriracha instead. Got a friend living in Pattaya whose Thai wife gave birth in the Samitivej Hospital here. There's another hospital here called Phayathai which is quite good too. Both of them have a pretty specialised Children's Health Care unit. Check out their websites. Pretty concised.

I personally brings my children to Samitivej. Excellent service with English speaking employees and very professional.

Yeah, I'd forgotten about Samitivej in Sri Racha. I used to use Samitivej in Bangkok - very good hospital - one of the top 3, so I'm sure the Sri Racha one is good. I'll wager its cheaper than BP, well worth a visit. :o

I too forgot about the hospitals in Sriracha. I hve never visited them, mainly because we only have a motorbike for transportation, but we now have a new car on order, and I will definately be checking out these hospitals. I too think they are cheaper than BPH, with the same good equipment.

Bangkok Pattaya Hospital(BPH) is a good hospital but they are very expensive compare to all hospitals in general. They are getting very greedy with us foreigners. In fact, guest who's paying for the new hospital they are building right now?

I highly recommend other hospitals outside of Pattaya that was mentioned. They are many other good ones out there with much cheaper prices with good healthcare. Delivering baby's are routine and women has been doing it for 1000's of years.

Gary,

Couldnt agree with your comments on Bangkok Pattaya costs.

Girlfriend of mine had a planned C section,4 days in a hospital suite, free food,24 hour care and attention, and a bag of childrens goodies so big they filled the car when we left.

There was 13 hospital staff in operating theatre plus us 2.

Cost was a fixed fee known in advance with no add ons for anything, of just 39,990 baht.

As Barry said, it depends on what rate they charge you - that's why it is so important to get the price in advance.

On the question of which hospital has the latest equipment, I wouldn't have thought the latest stuff would have been that critical on delivering a baby - Isn't all down to the obstretician? but what do I know? The last time I paced a maternity ward was in 1986.

Samitivej does have a good name and it might be worth checking out. 40 k might be a lot of dosh for the OP.

Well Chuffed I asked you lot!!

fantastic advice...

As Mobi suggetsed, not sure what's needed equipment-wise for labour, mi grandad says just

??hot towels and whiskey?? :D

i would be interested to know what kind of up to date equiment is required for poppin' out bairns.

Mobi, it may be long time since you were involved, but it's longer for me... 30 years as of next week since i was there ... and i don't remember much... not coz of the whiskey mind :D ... I was the baby :D:D

I will inquire further on all counts on monday-ish and Noel I will let you know chief..

and just one crazy thought... what about just hiring a midwife?? and buying some whiskey and some hot water and towels?.. :o that is actually a serious question

Arron,

Just a point re your comment "What kind of up to date equipment is required for popping out bairns"

Well personally I would want to know the hospital I choose had ALL the up to date equipment on the basis that you never know when the shits gonna hit the fan, and do you really want to put your unborn child at possibly risk, for the equivalent cost of a "Bell Ring" !!

Posted

since your wife's only giving birth in august, if you've got the time, take a trip and take a look for yourself. It makes a difference.

Another advice for you guys, up to date equipment does makes a difference but the key difference that change it all is the one that delivers your child. He/she will be the one who really makes a big difference. Cos if there's good equipment and a lousy midwife/doctor, you think they'll know how to use them?

Good nurses, doctors and services plays a great part in hospitals. We need them to assure us that they know what they're doing. Giving birth is giving a life. We will always want the best for our loved ones. don't we?

I guess the best way for you to choose your ideal hospital is to pay a visit and ask around if you need to. If they're interested, they'll be more than happy to provide you with all the information you need. Asking around is important but I guess everyone has their own point of view.

Chivas,

39,990 bhat might seems cheap to you but thats more than 1+ year salary for average Thais. Which is unthinkable for vast majority. Cost of labor is very cheap in Thailand. Public doctors only makes 20-30,000 bhat a month, nurses 5-8,000 per month, Pattaya prostitutes 10-60,000 per month.

I stand by what I said. BPH is a good hospital but it's overpriced to us foreigners.

I understand now why BPH is so expensive! 13 staff :o

I paid 7,000 baht in Bangkok for all this, but only 4 staff, and no goodies. :D

I now use Sattahip. Example: Blood transfusion and 3 day stay in BPH 36,000 baht 2004. Blood transfusion and 3 day stay Sattahip 1,900 baht 2005.
