Anti-democracy charges against protesters rejected
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Feb 12 – The Constitution Court today dismissed a petition by Pheu Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit against protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban for attempting to abolish Thailand’s constitutional monarchy.

Mr Prompong charged 10 members of the People’s Democracy Reform Committee (PDRC) including Mr Suthep with organising anti-government demonstrations with the objective of unconstitutionally acquiring administrative power.

The court said people exercised their rights and freedom in staging rallies which originated from a protest against the Amnesty Bill and their lack of trust in the government’s administrative performance.

Whether the defendants’ activities were against the Criminal Code or other laws would be up to the decision of those in charge of the criminal procedures, said the court.

Charges that the defendants were attempting to abolish the administrative system as stipulated in Section 68 of the Constitution were without grounds, the court concluded. (MCOT online news)

Water situation in Chao Phraya river basin critical

BANGKOK, 12 February 2014 (NNT) – A serious shortage of water is expected in the Chao Phraya river basin after local farmers exceedingly grew second-rice in the area, prompting the government to issue a ban to prevent further cultivation.

Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Yukol Limlaengthong said the water situation of the Chao Phraya river basin was now critical due to overconsumption of water for agriculture. Second-rice cultivation had exceeded limits with over 73% of water allocated for the area during drought this year having been used already, the minister said.

The Royal Irrigation Department had adjusted its water management plan so that farmers had sufficient water for farming, according to Mr Yokol.

The department has announced that it will stop providing water for agriculture in the Chao Phraya river basin from 1 February 2014 onward. The ministry’s assistance measures for farmers will be submitted to the Water and Flood Management Commission and the Cabinet next week.
