Anti-government protesters commandeer buses to block police entry

BANGKOK: -- Anti-government protesters this morning commandeered three buses of the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) to block Si Yaek Sao Ching Cha of Giant Swing intersection and Assadang-Saphan Mon road to block the entry of anti-riot police to retake the Ministry of Interior from the protesters.

The Interior Ministry was seized and occupied by anti-government protesters under the command of the Network of Students and People for the Reform of Thailand (NSPRT) for almost two months to prevent government officials to return to work. It is also a part of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee’s (PDRC) Shut Down Bangkok campaign to cripple the caretaker government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

The Interior Ministry is among five protest sites which the director of the Center for the Maintaining of Peace and Order (CMPO) declared to retake in today’s massive operations involving 25,000-strong police force. The operation is televised live on two state TV stations, Channel 9 and Channel 11.

NSPRT guards seized a Route 2 BMTA buses at 6.00 a.m. to block Si Yaek Sao Ching Cha or the Giant Swing junction and the deflated all its tyres.

Half an hour later, two Route 1 buses passing near the intersection were also commandeered and was used to block Assadang-Saphan Mon and Pak Klong Talad road.

But soldiers guarding near the place were called in and successfully persuaded the protesters to free one bus.

At press time, the police are negotiating with protest leaders for the return of the ministry but were unsuccessful as protesters said the seizure of the ministry was a significant strategy to paralyze the caretaker government.

They rejected the police request but instead reinforced their occupied stronghold with more barricades and more men to cope with the police attempt.

Situation remain tense late today.

Police blitz of protester rally sites since dawn today
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Feb 18 – Thai police launched a multi-pronged operation in the capital this morning to reclaim several rally venues which have been occupied by anti-government protesters for months.

More than 140 protesters were arrested as police raided and regained the rally site in front of the Energy Ministry and the PTT petroleum conglomerate headquarters on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road.

Nine companies of police officers arrived at the site shortly after dawn and negotiated with the protesters for 15-20 minutes seeking reoccupy the area, but the protesters, led by key People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) leader Ravee Maschamadol, refused to move out.

They were arrested without resistance and were pressed with charges of violating the emergency decree and intruding into state property.

Police said they found objects including explosives, pistols, drugs and bullet-proof vests.

Permanent Secretary for Energy Suthep Liumsirijarern said the Energy Ministry would coordinate with the Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO) to ensure safety before allowing officials to go back to work in the building, sealed off by protesters since Jan 2.

At the protester-occupied Interior Ministry, key PDRC leaders stood firm that they would not vacate the premises under pressure and negotiations by CMPO to reclaim the building. They continued their peaceful demonstration.

Protest leader Thaworn Senneam said the government lacked legitimacy to return to work at the ministry and protesters would not yield to any attempt to reclaim the Interior Ministry.

On Rajdamnoen Avenue, PDRC secretary general Suthep Thaugsuban led protesters in a peaceful sit-in demonstration on the road after marching from Government House. The group left their Pathumwan rally site for Government House early this morning.

The spot where Mr Suthep and PDRC protesters were sitting was close to Phan Fa Bridge where police were cracking down on Dharma Army protesters, led by Buddhist monk Phra Bodhirak.

Announcing through a loudspeaker, Mr Suthep called on protesters to stay calm.

He later held a serious discussion with Nitithorn Lamlua, a staunch protester and leader of the Network of Students and People for the Reform of Thailand, which has seized and occupied Rajdamnoen Avenue near Government House since November. (MCOT online news)
