THAI certain to gain profit this year

BANGKOK, March 13 - Thai Airways International (THAI) is certain the company's business will gain profits and projects revenue growth of 3-4 per cent this year.

THAI senior executive vice-president Chokchai Panyayong said, unlike last year where THAI lost Bt12 billion thanks to rising cost burdens, revenue is projected to grow this year, adding his affirmation on the airline's safety standards which is at international level.

Mr Chokchai admitted that the company reduced the number of flights operating in October-January in order to cut costs. He said Chinese passengers counting for 40 per cent of the overall passengers will start to come back to Thailand in Q2 due to the easing political situation.

Meanwhile, THAI this morning celebrated its new aircraft -- Airbus A330-300 and Boeing 777-300ER -- by having a leading Buddhist monk anoint them. The planes can carry passenger loads of 299 and 348 persons respectively.

Both aircraft are to fly regional routes and across continents, bringing THAI's aircraft lineup to 27 Airbus A330-300s, nine Boeing 777-300ERs and six Airbus A380s. (MCOT online news)

Oh my, here we go again. Every year this is predicted, then when the loss comes out there's always an excuse. How about the facts: too many freebies to "VIP's" and overpriced tickets on aging planes that no one wants to fly on.

Change the Livery paint air force colours, novel idea. if it's run by the air force chief, just run the airline for non public.

Poor old Thai...gotta get all them old airforce guys and cops out of the teams...bring in some good foreigners..and possibly a chance....but the way international carriers are going.....Thai Airways just ain't looking' good!

One small example - Thai Airways had the monopoly on flights to Khon Kaen - 3 per day when I retired here 4 years ago. Now, they are up to 5 per and have competition - AirAsia now has two flights per day from Bangkok to Khon Kaen. Thai goes to Suvarnabhumi and AirAsia to Don Mueang. Rumor has it that Nok Air will soon be flying Khon Kaen to Phuket - direct. Look out Thai Air - your domestic monopoly is long gone.
