BANGKOK: -- The police say they have arrested a member of local Redshirts group in Nonthaburi province and confiscated a number of military-grade weapons possessed by the group.

The arrest followed an explosion at the office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) on Sanambin Nam Road at around 23.30 last night. Upon inspecting the scene, police found damages on windows and walls of Building 1 inside the compound, but no injury has been reported.

The police suspect that the explosion has been caused by an M79 grenade launcher fired by perpetrators who wished to intimidate NACC officials.

Hours later, the police raided a flyover bridge at Soi Nonthaburi 46, close to the NACC headquarters, where members of a local Redshirts group called People's Radio for Democracy (PRD) had been camping.

Upon spotting the police force, the activists promptly fled from the bridge into wooded area nearby, but the officers gave chase and managed to arrest one suspect, identified as Mr. Rattanapong Intararangsi.

Police said Mr. Rattanapong was carrying a bag which contained one AK-47 rifle, 4 fully loaded magazines, and two grenades. Mr. Rattanapong denied the ownership of the weapons, claiming that an unknown individual has placed the weapons with him shortly before the arrest.

When the police searched the car of another PRD activist which was parked close to the flyover bridge, the officers also found one shotgun and 38 shotgun rounds.

Furthermore, the search in the wooded area yielded one M79 grenade launcher with 6 rounds of ammunition, one handgun, three grenades, and 36 rounds of M-16 rifle.

A high-ranking police officer said the police have been investigating the recent grenade attacks on NACC compound and searching many areas for possible weapon cache. They eventually decided to raid the PRD camp on flyover bridge after "suspicious activities" were reported, the officer added.

Mr. Surapong Tovichakchaikul, Deputy Prime Minister and chief adviser to the Centre for Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO), said in a press conference today that the authorities will not provide any privilege to the Redshirts suspects, and insisted that the police will investigate any crimes committed by all political sides equally without prejudice.

He refused to comment on the link between the confiscated weapons and the PRD group, stating that he is waiting further details from the police.

"But whoever commits a crime must be punished," Mr. Surapong said, "No exception".

Has to be Suthep throwing up a red herring

Be careful, you know there will be people on this thread later asking why you didn't say Suthep was throwing up a yellow herring.

Nice cache of munitions there. I think waterboarding and a car battery should get the truth as to who the others are and what they were doing with the weapons, but expect a protest from very high ranking PTP execs who would find such methods ......unacceptable. I wonder why, and nothing to do with humanitarian reasons. Good job for the man in Dubai the police are on his side.

That M79 is a copy of the American weapon. At no time were the stock and for are made from green plastic. Could this be one of the many that were manufactured in the Bang Na area during the 2011 anti-government activities? ph34r.pngph34r.png

Why is KhaoSot and the Thai police reporting about red weapon's cache???

Is there a shift in power happening?

That's what I'm wondering too, is the police feeling a shift of power? Or is it the military that's had enough with the threats from Ko Te and others, so they are leaning on the police?

The Police have already stated on public record they are redshit activists, so I doubt the "fake" side of things will wash if they try it later on.

Very interesting to see the actual contents listed, except for an RPG this happens to include every single weapon that people have been shot with, blown up or injured by over the past 4 years, so can we lay to rest that "it couldn't be the reds cos they wouldn't do that" and that they "are peace-loving hippies who would never harm a fly". It's total bullshit and insulting to think otherwise.

It's good that they've caught somebody and I don't think Mr. Rattanapong's defence that an unknown individual gave him the bag of weapons just before his arrest is going to stand up too well to cross examination whistling.gif .

However the assertion that this is some sort of "weapons kit" handed out to UDD factions around Thailand and they are responsible for all the shooting and bombing incidents in the past 4 years is taking the hatefest a wee bit too far.

"Mr. Rattanapong was carrying a bag which contained one AK-47 rifle, 4 fully loaded magazines, and two grenades."

What's the penalty for that in Thailand?

It's a bit bewildering to be honest. This is probably the last we'll see or hear of Mr. Rattanapong in the press, but it did make a minor headline today.

It's really amazing how the police can get "The Popcorn Shooter" and this guy all in the same week, don't you think?

Don't you wonder why the police can't block both sides of a crossover when making a raid? We see pictures of guns and stuff, not the usual finger pointing from the alleged terrorist which is the usual police MO.

Just saying...

And where is the PopCorn sack ?

He's in the Jail where the local "proctologist's" are turning his ass into something that resembles a blood Orange, maybe when these M79 lobbers get there, they can compare notes and see if their training differs, whilst they too are getting "internals" ;)

< sighs >

Good to see you completely miss the point and also exaggerate what I said.

1. Finally the Police have admitted to catching armed red shirt activists, forced to do so by the Army assistance no doubt

2. The weapons shown are exactly those used to perform ALL the attacks over recent months and years.

3. The point is that they can no longer be seen as the innocent peaceful unarmed side.

4. The point is that if this group is armed in such a way, the likelihood is that other red shirts are also.

5. The point is that it is now much easier to show that the red shits could easily have performed all the attacks as they do have all the weapons used apart from the RPG and handguns (and a popcorn bag).

Lots of speculation there, however both sides have a very "nasty" element within their ranks, with access to such weapons, there are no innocents sides here.
