Crude oil found on beaches
The Sunday Nation

A Walailak University lab test found that a tar-like substance discovered on Nakhon Si Thammarat beaches and other parts of the south recently is most likely processed crude oil.

The gas chromatography chemical analysis test showed the oil underwent a process to make it dense and thus able to sink underwater.

The university's president Keerath Sanguansai urged the authorities to locate the source of the leakage after Chumpon, Surat Thani, Koh Samui and Nakhon Si Thammarat reported the tar-like substance had washed ashore earlier this month.

The university's test on a seawater sample didn't detect any abnormal change yet, Keerath said.

There are concerns the substance could impact negatively on marine life and coastal ecosystems.

Nakhon Si Thammarat reported 11 dolphin deaths that were likely related to the crude oil.

Easy to know where this came from... it's the oil that was spilled in Koh Lanta a few months ago that was treated to disperse and sink. Out of sight, out of mind right?

Not sure about the likelihood of that - Lanta is the other side of the mainland - 1500km+ distance.

Wow that's terrible. And people thought it was algae?

What other type of oil would you find in Thailand ????

Apologies I didn't even know algae was oil. There are 2 threads about this running can they be merged?

Thsi will surely be a disaster if it stays this way into high season no?

Just south of Chumphon have scattered small globules scattered on the beach not concentrated, but a real pain if you walk the beach in bare feet.
