Tourist sights from Buriam to Chanthaburi

Hi there

I seek tourist advice about temples and things to see on a journey Im planning from Buriam to Chanthaburi on the coast.

If we are driving close to the Cambodian border can you recommend any must see Khmer temples or anything else.

We thought about staying a night in Sa Kaew to break up the journey. If you know of any better options along the way for a stop over it would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Prasat Phnom Rung is a fully restored Hindu temple in the Ankhor Wat style. It is situate on a 3000 foot high extinct volcano with views over the surrounding plains and of the mountains in Cambodia. Situate about 8okm South of Buriram. Just google it, plenty of pictures and maps of how to get there.

Prasat Muang Tam close to the aforementioned Prasat Phnom Rung is well worth a visit, usually quieter with less tourists than Phnom Rung.

Your route is littered with fine Khmer sites all the way to Aran. What is your mode of transport. Most can by done by bus (the buriram / chantaburi bus) and then motobike taxi for the sites which are a bit away from the main road.

Aran might be a better option for the night.

How fanatic are you? There about 10 places easy plus a pre historic museum in wat near Baan Kruat.

thanks for the replies. We will have a car and thus want to spend the day stopping off at a few of the best khmer sites. Can you recommend a few 'must see' sites mike2011?

thanks

Ta Muen Thom (spelling from google maps). Here is a link http://en.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=186616 VERY NICE place, right on the border, barbed wire on three sides, large temple complex and all for yourself. The place is some 15 kms west of your route by absolute worthwhile. One of the major Khmer sites in Thailand.

For the prehistoric museum : https://plus.google.com/100221735704138302092/about?gl=ph&hl=en

The small place in a wat and the farmers bring their finds there. They protect it and have stunning pieces. As good as anything BKK has to offer on the stone ages. Drop by and make a small donation. People who look down on Thai rural dwellers would be surprised who refined many of them are, these museum is a testament to this fact.

There are several Khmer Kilns in the area. They were excavated and are well-preserved. The production was industrial and shows that there area was the heart of Khmer pottery industry. Easily doable by car the road was not so nice when I went so do it slowly. Do this google map search: quarry near Ban Kruat Buri Ram Thailand.

On your way south in Non Din Daeng is Prasat Nong Hong. Also nice and very easily reachable. Good for a short stop and nice location. search on google maps: Prasat Nong Hong Som Poi Buri Ram Thailand

Further south a "must see" Prasat Sadok Kok Thom, again right on the border. It was under restauration a few years back and should be done by now. It was already very impressive. Dont miss it!

South of Aran:

Prasat Khao Noi. On a step hill above the surrounding villages. nice place and nice views. Just a short ride from Aran.

There are many more places.

USe google maps as some really dedicated people have posted tons of images in the photo function. I saw most places earlier and sometimes a hard time to get to the right place.

I hope this helps a bit. By the way, there forums on the web dedicate to the town of Surin. One has a veritable database with photos on those temples. Mind-blowing.
