BANGKOK: -- The Government Pharmaceutical Organization warns motorists to avoid taking pain relief and muscle relaxant medications while on driving as it puts at risk not only drivers but also passengers and others sharing the same roads.

Deputy director of the GPO Nipaporn Chataviriyaphand said that as a large number of people will either travel homes or to visit tourist destinations to celebrate the Songkran water festival by motor vehicles, there is high risk of road accidents if they are unaware of drugged driving.

According to speculation by the Disease Control Department of the Ministry of Public Health, between 268 and 334 people will die from road accidents this year.

It said there are several causes of road accidents but among them are feeling sleepy while driving, and falling asleep.

She then warned motorists to avoid pain relief and muscle relaxant medications while on driving as both drugs could make drivers to feel sleepy or to fall asleep.

Pain killing and muscle relaxant medications named included Tramadol, Amitriptyline, and Gabapentin, Tolperisone, and Orphenadrine.

How much side affect these drugs have on the people varied on each individual but it would decrease the driving efficiency of motorists, make them slow in decision making, and also cause poor sighting or see not clearly.

This will put risk of accident, she said.

For diabetes patients who have to take medication while on driving to lower high blood sugar, and are unable to have food on time, they might suffer from low blood sugar which could lead to sweating, shakiness, dizziness.

She advised these people to prepare their food and sweets while on driving.

Furthermore, she added for safe travel, motorists should have good travel plan before setting off, and see to it that all medications needed are arranged.

I go driving.

I don't go on driving.

Sometimes I go driving on and on, to see what's there.

"...on and on,"

We've noticed.

Really? We need to be told this?!

Like another Meechai condom on the thumb lesson?

Not everyone's as knowledgeable and informed as you are. Perhaps a condom on the head lesson is necessary.

Are they serious? Is Nipaporn Chataviriyaphand related to yingluck?

This is the type of advice I would expect from yingluck. Advice like "Do your job effectively" or "Look after the people during Songkhan" or "Use water efficiently"

Next they will state that driving while asleep is not recommended.
