Are Song Taew's the worse thing in Pattaya?

Featured Replies

It would be better if there were half as many.

Once or twice the city has vowed to reduce the number of them by 50%. However, as every other vow they make to improve the city, or the country in general, it never happens. Thailand's government officials are full of pipe dreams and hot air. That's about it. Anything to get their name in the press.

If they reduce them by half and change nothing else, what do you want, people to have to wait TWO hours to board a bus coming from Jomtien high season evenings? Face it, the entire public transport system here (such as it is) is dominated by forces that don't actually have the PUBLIC (tourists and residents) top of their mind, Basically, "intelligent design" -- it hasn't happened here.

The waiting time/fullness of bahtbuses going from Jomtien to Pattaya in high season is a direct result of the appalling traffic congestion in south Pattaya. It takes a bahtbus (or a car) perhaps 30+ minutes or more to do a trip that would take under 5 minutes if the traffic was fluid.

Sort out the absurd and pointless traffic jams in south Pattaya (almost all of which are caused by double/triple-parking, and manoeuvring tour buses) and there would be no shortage of bahtbus seats to/from Jomtien.

I think baht buses are great, one of the BEST things about Pattaya. What other city in the world has transport you can flag down at any point, comes past every few minutes and costs 10 baht? Shame other places don't have something similar. In the UK of course it would be against elf and safety.

I agree and they keep the speed of the traffic down. Who hasn't seen young Thai boys weaving in and out of traffic without a care in the world? Imagine if just 1 person moves their vehicle, he'd be creamed. Anyway, the slow, bulky songthaews force everyone to slow down. Perfect!

Anyone who considers song-thaews to be the worst thing in Pattaya has surely missed out on many of the other experiences that this delightful city has to offer !

I don't agree because during these times the vast majority are passing EMPTY. More than enough space to pick up everyone waiting for a BUS seat. A REAL taxi system is needed for the demand for actual taxis, which exists as well.

I dont mind them but I usually find it just as quick to walk places and you arent sitting in the middle of all the exhaust fumes waiting at lights etc

I offer a limo service Jomtitn-Pattaya set price 1,500 alternatively get some excersise and walk

No, they are at the bottom of the worst (transportation) things list : Moto taxi (jerks) , Minivans, Tour buses, Taxi meters, Song taews
