LAMPANG: -- Tropical storm raked Thoen district of Lampang before dawn Saturday, causing widespread damages and power outage in large areas.

Local authorities said the almost one hour storm ripped off roofs of more than 70 homes and blacked out electricity in four tambons - Napong, Mathod, Lomret, and Thoenburi - covering thousands of homes.

Several trees were uprooted and blocked traffic on many roads in the affected areas.

Meanwhile the Meteorological Department warned of more tropical storms in the North from April 20-23 as the south easterly wind is increasing in strength and will affect upper part of the country.

Bid for 4G mobile phone licenses in August

141471-imagejpeg-208760-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) is to propose the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications (NBTC) call auction of two fourth-generation (4G) mobile phone spectrums on the 1800 MHz in August with base price starts at 11.6 billion baht.

NTC chairman Setthapong Malisuwan, said the bandwidth of 1,800MHz spectrum held by two Thailand’s mobile operator – True Move and Advanced Info Service – (AIS) whose concessions have expired, is expected to be auctioned in August.

He said the set base price has been agreed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and he would propose the NBTC for approval of the auction on April 23.

The base price is 3% higher than that of the 3G spectrum auction because the 4G spectrum will be used to supplement the data traffic on 3G service.

He said each license will be valid for 19 years.

Setthapong said the National Telecommunications Commission also plans to auction two 4G licenses for bandwidth of 900 MHz spectrum held by AIS, whose concession will expire on September 30, 2015.

He said advanced auction for the spectrum should take place this November.
