Thailand on alert after case of Coronavirus reported in Malaysia

BANGKOK, 20 April 2014 (NNT) – Thailand is stepping up preventive measures against coronavirus after a man has reportedly died of the deadly disease.

According to Dr. Narong Sahametapat, Permanent Secretary for Public Health, Thailand has been on high alert after a case of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, also known as MERS-CoV, has been found in its neighboring country, Malaysia. He said all countries bordering Malaysia including Thailand are at risk; therefore, the Public Health Ministry has ordered all hospitals nationwide to keep a close eye on their patients.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released neither warnings nor instructions, said Dr. Narong. He however suggested that people avoid livestock, wash their hands regularly, and see a doctor immediately if they come down with flu and don’t get better in two days.

The man believed to have been killed by the Coronavirus had traveled to Saudi Arabia, where he came in direct contact with a camel. The man developed a cold on April 4th and died on April 13th.

NONG BUA LAMPHU, 20 April 2014 (NNT) - The northeastern province of Nong Bua Lamphu has distributied sticky rice seed to farmers in a project aiming to boost organic sticky rice growing in the area.

According to governor Chayapol Thitisak, Na Klang district has been the province's key area in producing sticky rice for decades. To improve the quality of rice for local and ASEAN markets, rice seed of higher quality should be provided to them.

24,600 kilograms of rice seed were distributed to 660 farmers in the ceremony held on Sunday. The expected high-quality product should open a chance for those farmers to sell more rice and earn more income to improve their standard of living.

BANGKOK, April 20 - Suthep Thuagsuban, secretary-general of the anti-government People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), this morning led protesters to march in the capital from Lumpini Park, their main rally site, to Silom area and Asiatique The Riverfront.

Marching to ask more people to join the group's next mass rally, the demonstrators left Lumpini Park at 10am, walking along Silom Rd, using Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Intersection through Sathorn Rd on the way to Asiatique The Riverfront along the 8 km route.

Security was tightened for safety and to facilitate PDRC leaders and marchers.

Mr Suthep said PDRC is not concerned about the next mass rally of its opponent, the pro-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).

The UDD is planning to gather one day before the Constitutional Court ruling on whether caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's transfer of National Security Council secretary-general Thawil Pliensri to an inactive post was unlawful.

The Constitutional Court has not yet announced when it will deliver a ruling on the case.

The PDRC leader said the caretaker government has obviously committed wrongdoings, therefore people must come out and drive out the caretaker government. (MCOT online news)

Central bank to re-estimate 2014 growth after slowdown drags on

BANGKOK, 20 April 2014 (NNT) - The Bank of Thailand (BoT) has announced to revise the country’s economic growth forecast again in June following a continuous slowdown and budget disbursement delay.

BoT Governor Prasarn Trairatworakul said the central bank would likely decrease its previous growth estimate of 2.7% due to the sluggish economy and the government’s 2014 budget problems caused by the dissolution of parliament. The central bank was concerned over decreasing domestic consumption and confidence of the private sector but it started to see signs of lower household debt, the governor said.

As for policy interest rate, Mr Prasarn said the 2% rate was still suitable for the Thai economy but warned that keeping it low for a long time would pose risks similar to those which had led to the latest real estate bubble and financial crisis in the U.S.

The Monetary Policy Committee's next meeting on policy interest rate is scheduled on 23 April.
