Hotels Close to SirirajPiyamaharajkarun Hospital (SiPH)

My wife and will be coming down from the N.E. of Thailand for treatments at Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital (SiPH).  The one across the river.

We need to find a hotel very close to the hospital.

We hate to sound picky but, my wife will getting treated for cancer, and although I am not in a wheelchair, I am somewhat physically challenged.  Walking long distances has gotten more and more difficult with each passing year.

We live in Thailand, and are familiar with Bangkok's one-way streets, no U-turns for kilometer after kilometer, it's infamous broken sidewalks, etc., etc.

So, what is touted on hotel booking sites as a: "easy 10 minute walk", does not apply to us.

Ideally the hotel would be right next door to the hospital.

The hospital suggested the "SD Avenue Hotel"?  However, hotel's website (http://www.sdavenue.com/location.html) map, did not even show the Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital (SiPH) on it's map.

Thanks in advance.

According to that map it is located about 5 minutes by taxi from Siriraj.  Sadly I can't offer much more on that side.  However bear in mind that the hotels on the other side will offer you a lot more choice and comfort.  I am not a big supporter of the whole "Khao San" thing but I can say that hotels on Phra Arthit might well suit you better than trying to find something decent (not a lot of choice) on the Pin Klao side.

This will work as long as you are both able to use the river boat as you will be VERY close to the Phra Arthit (Banglamphu) stop which is 1 or 2 stops from Siriaj Hospital (Phra Nok).  http://www.chaophrayaexpressboat.com/en/services/route-print.asp

If you think you can use the Express Boat I think you'll enjoy a much higher quality of life.  I know the Pin Klao area very well and have lived around there for 6 years....but wouldn't recommend hotels in the area.  If this can't work for you then let me know and I'll see if I can find anything else by asking about (I doubt it though).

OK, having gone to Siriraj many times, SiPH is completely separate and very modern building, on Arun Amarin. If you look at the hotel's map, an arrow saying "From Pin Klao Bridge" is pointing almost exactly at SiPH. But SiPH is at the intersection of Borommarat. I would think you'd need to take a taxi from wherever you're staying. Having walked around there, I never did see a hotel. That said, there must be some considering the popularity of Siriraj.

You will find government side Out Patient Dept. building on Arun Amarin too, right at the corner of the small street that goes down to the river taxi dock, Wang Lang, also called Siriraj, dock No. 10. It's an intense, crowded, steamy walk up that street to the hospital and then turn right through the entire depth of the property to SiPH.

The river taxi option, however, may present a problem if you have mobility issues. As you know, when the taxi boat arrives, it hits the dock and floats past it until the boat guard throws the rope around the (don't know the proper word) stanchion. Then the boat's backward momentum hauls it to the dockside, where people kind of have to jump a little bit onto the moored dock.

BTW, I looked into cancer treatment at SiPH but it was far more expensive than Bangkok Hospital Medical Centre.

Kaoboi Bebobp has a point with the location inside the complex.  However I would just like to say that most of the time I have observed the boat people taking a little longer at a dock when boarding elderly or infirm passengers.  Initially the boat bumps up against but they can, and do, get it settled up against the pier for long enough to board.  When you arrive at Siriraj it is true that it is a busy soi but you can turn right into the back of the complex about 10-15m up the soi and enjoy a nice walk through the back of the complex on the very flat road.

Obviously if you have any issue with mobility that means you can't walk then you will need to use a taxi anyway.

Coincidentally I have remembered this place which is located 1 soi down from Siriraj. http://www.ibrikresort.com/index.html  I'm not sure of the applicability as I know that you will have to walk back up the soi to get any transport and the place is not 24 hour managed (it is only 3 rooms....though very nice and in a stunning location).  Google maps shows a route to Siriraj pier but I can't confirm if that is open or not.  Maybe a query to the management through the website?

I have also just found this place...I know nothing about it but it is right next to Siriraj pier.  This would be a 10 minute stroll to SiPH.  http://www.baanwanglang.com/

These 2 are both close, but I would enquire about access to Siriraj with them.  Please remember that you will be "restricted" in your access to restaurants, etc in the evening but naturally there will be plenty of Thai options.  Let us know how you get on.

My wife and I stayed at S.D. Park hotel just over a year ago. The room was a decent size, clean and the special rate was from memory 1600฿ inc. breakfast. The staff at the hotel seemed to be friendly and service no problems. You would have to get a taxi to Siriraj about 5 minutes away.
The hotel is near Tesco Lotus, and Central Pinklao plus in the evening many food stalls and markets immediately outside the hotel.
We have been going to Siriaj Hospital constantly for the last 4 plus years and personally I would find the boat trip from the Bangkok side a right pain. Better to stay on the Pinklao side.

All the best,
BAYBOY.

Thanks again for the replies.

My wife and I have reconsidered having her surgery, and extended treatments, performed at Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital.

Plus, we need a hotel room for two weeks this visit, and the S.D. Avenue couldn't provide one for that long. ???

My wife will also need follow-up treatments, after these initial treatments, probably on a monthly basis, for quite awhile.

Thanks T.V. community.

I have heard good things about treatment at SiPH. But Bob Strutt you put your finger on one of the many reasons why I rejected SiPH. First and foremost, my treatment would have been 140,000 baht more than at Bangkok Hospital. But getting to SiPH was often filled with stress. BKK-H was a breeze to get to on a shuttle van from two BTS and one MRT stations. I had big communications problems at SiPH. Believe it or not, I couldn't call the cancer centre direct. The chief nurse gave me her mobile phone number and a personal Gmail email address. Frequently, her phone was off for obvious reasons of being with a patient or in a meeting. BKK-H cancer centre was completely accessible by phone with good quality information and immediate aid. Frankly, I can't say enough good things about BKK-H.

I hope the OP was able to reach a decision and I hope things have gone well.

there is NO hotel-in the usual sense, in your walking distance from that building. What above tells you about the boats is also true-no time for mercy on them.

Most of those general Thai hospitals have some rooms for rent for relatives, but If so, I guess thats also i the main/old building, also for you near impossible to cross over. Traffic in that area can be even worse as in central BKK-plus most roads around there do not even have sidewalks at all. and its also due to location mainly up/down via bridges. You may still want to enquire about them- such a hospital has dozens of young lads in training who can sit you in a wheelchair and bring you over-for a small fee.

There are 2 hotels just south of the PATA crossing, say about halfway between SD-AV and the hosp. 1 is a tipical Thai shorttime-curtains etc, the other is apparently so Thai that it does not even, after open for 2,5 yrs now, appeared on TripAdvisor- so I guess they do not speak English and has no english name on it. The shorttime is on the right side to take taxi-the Thai one not-U-turn or very long backtrip needed. A new SKytrain (actually the metro/MRT) is under construction there, I do not know the current state-re noise etc.

From what I recall-but that may have changed- SD- Ave is now mainly aiming at Chinese tourgroups-not the most likeable of other guests for most farang. The other proposition MAY be the old Rattanakosin-or ROYAL HTL, just off Sanam LUang-in fact shorter by-a same short taxiride to that hosp., via the bridge. Its fairly old and not recent renovated.
