BANGKOK, 7 May 2014 (NNT) – The cabinet meeting has given a green light to a budget of 500 million baht to help the victims of the 6.3-magnitude quake that rocked the northern part of Thailand on Monday evening.

Government Deputy Spokeswoman Sunisa Lertpakawat revealed that the cabinet had approved a relief budget of 500 million baht for the quake-ravaged provinces in the northern region. She added that a committee, led by Deputy Prime Minister Plodprasob Suraswadi, had been set up to oversee the relief operation and draw up measures for deal with future tremors.

Thailand on Monday experienced the strongest quake since 1935. The disaster killed one person and injured more than 20. The quake as well as a number of aftershocks damaged houses, buildings, and public facilities in the region.

The money allocation may run into a problem . It may be unconstitutional to allocate any funds,, as the government has no authority to set aside funds for any activity that is not already in the budget and accounted for. Furthermore, the expenditure of such money in a specific area can be considered to be "political" and could impact the possible election. As per the previous EC rulings, large amounts of money cannot be disbursed in any one region.

Good post GK. non biased, thanks.

I wonder how much would have been given if the earthquake had happened in the south of Thailand. The same?

Classic, just one of many. Is there any subject on this forum that will not be made political and blamed on the government?

Some people are just truly sad.

I agree. The negativity by some posters leads me to believe their lives are controlled by hate, distrust, boredom, resentments and sadness. Perhaps some of it is fueled by alcohol, drugs or some other cause.

Easy Does It.

Are you seriously saying the (caretaker) government will be prevented from responding to a natural disaster? If you are right, and God forbid that you are, it is both a very sad day for Thailand and a very shrewd move by the government. If the allocation of funds is struck down there will be a huge backlash. Perhaps "a hurricane will be unleashed that God himself cannot stop!"

You might be OK Jack, but how about a bit of concern for your fellow men women and children, who are suffering from this natural disater? Not a single care or thought for them, you are far too busy trying, but failing, to be clever. You are a very sad person.
