I haven't watched the final yet (only the two semifinals so far) but I reckon the anti-Putin politics was a big factor in this win. As far as best song performance, that's more debatable. Last year the best song was really much more obvious. Still this performance was certainly one of the best and a credible winner. There is always politics in the Eurovision voting.

l disagree. This is the only chance for untalented songwriters and singers to soil the airwaves across Europe for a few minutes before they rightfully vanish into obscurity never to be seen or heard again.

More on the politics of the voting this year:

http://www.haaretz.com/news/world/1.589913

Online petitions were started in Belarus, Armenia and Russia - whose government passed a law last year banning "gay propaganda" among minors - to have Wurst removed or edited out of broadcasts in their countries.

...

The Eurovision competition, which has been held annually since 1956, was created to help foster unity after World War Two and is meant to be non-political. But political strife slipped between the cracks at this year's contest.

Many in the audience booed when the Russian contestants, the 17-year-old Tolmachevy twin sisters, were presented at Saturday's opening ceremony and again when they were awarded points from other, mostly neighbouring, nations.

It was widely speculated that Russia's entry could suffer for the country's annexation of Crimea in March and the government's intransigence on gay rights. Eurovision is hugely popular in the gay community.

"The two Russian girls are sweet, and it is not their fault. But this is a party for everybody. Russia doesn't get that," said one of the booing spectators, a gay Dutch fan who identified himself as Xander.

You've got to be kidding.

Little chance of Eurovision being axed. It is one of the longest running TV programmes of all time, every year since 1956 and is watched by an audience of some 200 million across Europe and globally, even LOS.

As you have nations competing who are in de facto conflict situations, Azerbaijan-Armenia, Russia-Georgia, Russia-Ukraine, perhaps territorial disputes could be settled by the respective nations Eurovision rankings plus perhaps a resurrected Jeux sans Frontiers, hopefully without Stuart Hall...

As to it being the home of mediocrity, while the offerings this year by France, San Marino and others were certainly up to that requirement, Eurovision has launched the careers of Abba, Celine Dion and Julio Iglesias.

Probably the most extraordinary spectacle last night was Poland's entry, extolling the virtues of Slavic girls, whilst stage left a well-endowed Polish lady with a partial wardrobe malfunction was pleasuring a broom stick handle in the style of churning butter....!!

So...this is the kind of world...you want your grandkids to grow up in...hum?

If the worst thing we have to worry about is an Austrian bearded version of Shirley Bassey life could be a lot worse.

Tolerance is a virtue enjoyed by many people, especially the young.

What's the point of this? Don't transsexuals want to look like women? So what's with the freaky beard? It's the stuff of nightmares...

He seems to be a drag queen performer and not a transgender person. They are not the same thing. However you'd need to speak to him for the particulars. Some people reject all of those kinds of labels and that is hopefully their right to do so.

Only one down side. He's a real talent but the bearded drag thing is really in a way a gimmick. When combined with his talent and good luck in political timing, he won. But ... the next Eurovision bearded drag queen that comes along will just be seen as a COPY CAT. So he did it. It's done. That's over. But it was great!

OK, I didn't know before (guessed as much though) but the "bearded lady" is fully identified as a man and the bearded lady is his stage persona.

Predictably, reports are that Russian crowds BOOED the win of the Austrian.

The Russian political meme now is that the west threatens and surrounds them and a big symbol of the west is tolerance for things like gay marriage.

To see this Euroshow from hell having the p*** ripped out of it is hilarious!

And the reaction from the Russians was the icing on the cake. thumbsup.gif

The world has become one screwed up place.

The "bearded lady" is an act designed to win a competition. It is also cleverly pitched to capitalise on bigotry as demonstrated in certain countries.

Far sadder and "screwed up" is the sight of talent-free, farang trash, low on the teeth to tats ratio, wandering around clutching a child of whatever gender appeals, as seen throughout SE Asia....
