Sir Jack Brabham dead

SYDNEY: -- Three-time formula one world champion Sir Jack Brabham has died, aged 88.

Brabham, a former Royal Australian Air Force mechanic, began his motorsport career on Australian speedway dirt tracks in the late 1940s.

He headed to Britain and joined the Cooper Racing Team, with which he won the 1959 and 1960 formula one championships.

But it was his own Brabham racing cars - designed and engineered with friend and fellow Australian Ron Tauranac - that led to him winning the 1966 championship.

Brabham is the only person to have won the formula one world championship in his own car.

Rest in Peace Jack, another Aussie Icon passes.

He secured his 1st championship by pushing his car 100 metres after it ran out of fuel. RIP Sir Jack, a true legend of the sport.

Yes, could you imagine that happening now? Not likely. Can't imagine a driver designing his own championship winning car either.

Apparently he was a dinkum down to earth guy to go with it too, such a rare combination.

Rest in peace Sir Jack, you were a true inspiration, never to be forgotten.

These days he'd be disqualified for failure to provide a post race fuel sample. cheesy.gif

TRULY A LEGEND. He claimed he would die without an enemy in the world...... He planed to "outlive the bastards."Vale Sir Jack.

The act of a driver pushing his car over the finish line was banned a number of years ago. Designing a car now requires experts from many different fields so it's impossible for 2 people to do so.

A true icon and gentleman from an era long past, sadly. My late father was a marshal at motor racing events and I remember seeing Sir Jack in the early/mid 60's. A real sportsman and gentleman. RIP.

A Legend indeed !

Sad to see you pass, Sir Jack, you will not be forgotten. RIP.

A sad day for F1. I saw him race a few times at Brands and Silverstone. RIP Sir Jack

If you can remember these kind of cars racing, then you are...well....old. biggrin.png

There's lots of YouTube interviews with him about his whole career...good stuff...
