Chaturon arrested after he emerged at the FCCT

BANGKOK: -- Former education minister Chaturon Chaisaeng was held in military custody this afternoon shortly after he emerged from hiding to show up at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand.

He told foreign correspondents that he had no intention to live in exile abroad or to go underground to fight the military junta. However, he said he was ready to be arrested by the military and chose to defy the coup makers by resorting to civil disobedience and to face any consequences.

The ex-minister called on the military to put him on trial in a normal court if he was to be charged of any offences instead of being tried by a military court. He also urged the National Council for Peace and Order to return the sovereign power to the people as quick as possible.

Mr Chaturon was summoned to report to the NCPO but he defied the order saying that he preferred the military to come to him and arrest him.

The punitive actions for violating the conditions are two year imprisonment and/or a fine of 40,000 baht.

ICT Min pulls plug on over 200 websites for provoking unrest

BANGKOK, 27 May 2014 (NNT) – The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has so far closed more than 200 websites that are deemed to be a threat to national security and continues to closely monitor against misuse of social media.

In compliance with the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO)’s instruction, Permanent Secretary for ICT Surachai Srisarakham stated that over 200 sites on the internet had thus far been terminated by the ICT Ministry due to inappropriate contents and tendency to stir up social conflicts. He affirmed that a constant watch would be kept over people’s use of the internet and social media by a newly-established committee, which was made up of officials from the ICT Ministry, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, the Royal Thai Army and the Royal Thai Police.

The ICT Ministry has also drawn up the national internet gateway project, to be supervised by TOT and CAT Telecom, as a long-term measure to eradicate provocative online materials. The new project is believed to facilitate the inspection of suspicious websites and the blocking of viewers’ access to prohibited contents.

In addition, the ICT Ministry has requested cooperation from all internet service providers in reporting any discovery of websites defying the order of the NCPO. Public members who have any knowledge of such violation are also encouraged to contribute to the effort by contacting the ministry via telephone or email.
