Summer internship - type of visa / working permit?

I applied for an ED visa but for some reason I was given a Non-Immigrant type 'O' visa for my unpaid marketing internship in Thailand.

I do not have a Thai spouse, children or parents and am not retired, but I'm a student (UK) who is going to to a summer internship in Chiang Mai.

I have two questions:

1. Can a work permit be issued with my Non-Immigrant type 'O' visa?

2. In case I reapply for an ED-visa, is it possible to get an 'intern work permit' based on this type of visa?
