Yala officials on high alert against attacks on power sources

YALA, 18 June 2014 (NNT) - Yala authorities are beefing up security near power lines in the province amid fears that insurgent attacks may cause blackouts.

The near-daily attacks in the southern region worry officials especially after the Chana Power Plant, the main electrical power source in the South, has temporarily stopped its electricity generating service during the 28-day gas supply disruption from the JDA-A18 well due to maintenance.

The power production capacity in southern provinces will drop by 710 megawatts per day during the period of maintenance.

The Army Region 4 has dispatched units to patrol areas prone to attacks in a bid to protect power sources. Back-up generators have also been prepared in the event of an emergency.

Local officials have asked residents to report any suspicious activities to the 1341 hotline. They are also urged to reduce power consumption, especially during early evening hours, as power use in the region reaches 2,450 megawatts from 6.30 p.m. – 9.30 p.m. So far no power outages have been reported in Yala.
