Getting Umbilical Hernia Treated in Bangkok - Can Anyone Advise on the Cost/Recovery Time?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Back in the UK and just had a check up and have been told I have an umbilical hernia.

Problem is I return to bkk in 10 days so GP says it'll take longer to get me in so will need to do back in Thailand.

Wondering if anyone has undergone this procedure?

Also, GP mentioned they'll just "pop it back in" - so after a little digging it'll be either a quick fix by the sounds of things or if it's 2cm or more a gauze will be required - therefore longer recovery time?

If anyones experienced this medical fix and costs over in bkk your feedback would most welcome.

Many thanks.

Costs will be all over the map depending on the hospital, and also on whether it is done laparascopically or not, laparoscopic being more expensive.

Very roughly somewhere in the range of 20 - 100,000 baht, the higher end being in an "international" private hospital and the lower end in a government or military hospital.

While govt & military hospitals are the least expensive, getting it done there would take several visits and entail waits so not the speediest option.

You'll be up and walking about the day after (though a little sore) but will need to avoid heavy lifting and so on for a couple of weeks.

In the West this is day surgery but in Thailand they'll likely want to keep you overnight.

Just came back from a Hospital here in Pattaya, they wanted 160.000 Thb with up to 2 nights stay in Hospital for the same procedure. Its not urgent and I am not feeling a lot of discomfort, thus I am going for a 2nd opinion somewhere else.

Question, could it be that this (IMHO) excessive price has something to do with that I mentioned insurance.

Sent from my iPad so Please excuse any typos

That is AFAIK the single most expensive hospital in Thailand, their prices are usually much higher than even other top end hospitals.

A 2 night stay is totally unnecessary. in the West this would be a day surgery.
