How do folk on here generally find it living in Khon kaen?

IMHO KK is too far from Bkk, traffic too bad, and in general not that good to live in. It might be better to be in the BKK outskirts like Nontaburi or perhaps Pakchong between Saraburi and Korat.

Of course different strokes for different folks. I have lived several places in Thailand over the last 25 years and now I would never consider anything more than +/-2 hrs out of Bkk.

For a family man, you can't go wrong with KK.

It has everything you need and more.

First, it is a city for families, but also has it's entertainment venues.

I presume you rented a house in the quite new development going left from Tesco Express, near the lake.

You have in walking distance many nice restaurants for all kinds of taste.

The Plaza is 10 minutes driving from you with all the modern shops.

If you fancy a beer, plenty of shops next to the lake admiring the sunsets.

There are 2 big Tescos, Big C, Tops and all the big stores around you.

You can't go wrong.

Best of Luck with your move.

Hi Costas,

Thanks for your replay and that is exactly what I wanted to hear and reinforces my sentiments. We haven't made the move yet but will be inside 2 months, it has been recommended to live at Pimanchon 2 village near the lake. One thing I didn't mention before is that my wife is from North West Sissaket so she is happy that she will be nearer her family, I think it will take around 3 hours or so to drive there. And yes I do like a beer a couple of times a week and know that there is a good splattering of bars up there. I assume high speed internet is fine in a city like KK.

I'm done with Pattaya, I've enjoyed it here but time to move on.

Cheers.

OK Pat. I would love to have a look at KK some time, so when you settle in plz let us know when the house warming BBQ will be . I might invite myself.

Thanks. cool.png

I really couldn't think of anything worse living in those places suggested. 30 mins flight to bkk from KK, 9 flights a day, but realistically with all the fluffing around 2 hours door to door.

For almost 15 years I made the short term stays in the various Thai tourist spots. I first came to Khon Kaen as a volunteer at a large NGO. After 3 long term volunteer stays, I just decided to relocate. That was 10 years ago. Still here.

While the niceties of Udon Thani were well described above, I still adhere to the line I first used when living in rural USA:

If you didn't bring it, it ain't here.

I have stayed in the Pullman hotel in KK several times...must be one of the best hotels (for the price) in all Thailand. I would always have a room on the 19th/20th floor.

However, when I looked out of the window and contemplated that endless expanse of flatness stretching to the far horizon, I knew I could not live in a place where there were no mountains within sight. One man's meat....

As you say, to each his own. If there were a mountain or ocean/sea view, I'd be too busy to notice. If you need movies, shopping, night life, and especially the convenience to travel somewhere else rather than stay where you are, I would say neither UT or KK would be a good place for you.

Must be a joke.....

Now that is stretching it a bit. The entire place is a.massive building site for the last 5 years.

Hi you will find it very much peaceful than Pattaya for sure. Some nice areas you can rent in. This year has been so hot 38-42c and dry.

Close to couple big dams where you can have a good day out, plenty shopping good markets. Pretty good choice.

True.

Same littering and garbage everywhere, like rest of the kingdom.

I have lived in KK 7 years and find it a wonderful city for families. In fact 4 of those years in Pmon 2. I moved from Pimon 2 a year ago as it has gotten to big and 2 crowded.

I moved to a new village just 2k down the road and do not have to deal with the Lake traffic. It's just horrendous.

In addition, the Falangs in PM 2 think their crap don't stink and which doesn't lend a friendly environment. I have 2 boys in private school at a cost of about B50,000/yr. They are in an English program and do quite well.

As for housing. You can get a new 3 bedroom 2 bath home for 15,000 or less. If you look around, you will find houses that have never been occupied as there are so many new villages built and being built.

If you have any addition questions, PM me and I will be glad to point you in the right direction. Good luck.

Nothing More to say, others have said it all, but to reinforce your decision to move there.

Being going there for the past 9 or 10 years (loosing track of the time), wife and me owns property there.just outside the ring road. Fifteen min and we are in the city and all it has to offer, but still be in a country style environment with the sound of birds rather than motorbikes. As soon as I am able to retire from my job, I am there full time.

Great restaurants, nice markets, everything you will ever need.

love to go to the night markets. Hanging out at Ubolrat dam in a bamboo hut at the edge of the water drinking a beer eating barbecue shrimps, and watching the kids play in the water,

KKC is the place for me, Love it there!!!

If I never saw BBK,or Pattaya again it would be too soon.

KK from a tourists pov I love it there.

Everything you need in a city, and things like eating out, or going for a beer are cheap.

Locals always are friendly, good bunch of expat locals there also.

If I was to live in Thailand, KK would be the place.

I think you will love living there, good luck!

Thanks for the responses, almost all of them have been positive, which have made me feel good about the move.

I/we will be up there next weekend, can anyone recommend an individual or a company to contact that can show me a few houses? Thai or Farang is ok. Khon kaen homes and ddproperty seem to be the big 2 up there..

Cheers.

Good to hear you are making a move PP.

Trust it works out +++ for you.

My home is Korat - but due to work I am seldom there.

All the best, all the same.

Will you change your name to Khon Kaen Pat ?
