Egypt: Al-Jazeera journalists await trial verdict

(BBC) A court in Egypt will deliver verdicts in the case of three al-Jazeera journalists jailed since December.

Peter Greste, Mohammed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed are accused of spreading false news and supporting the Muslim Brotherhood. They deny the charges.

The case has caused an international outcry, with rights groups saying the trial is politicised.

Australian PM Tony Abbott has appealed to Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi for Mr Greste's release.

Prosecutors have asked the judge to sentence the men to between 15 and 25 years in prison.

22 staff members of Al Jazeera's Egyptian bureau resigned in 2013, because of biased coverage in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood. I am all for freedom of the press, but maybe maybe the court's claims are not so far off the mark.

Appreciate the comment. There is always another side of the story, and I will spend some time investigating all. Thanks

Having read what this biased coverage may have entailed, it seems to have involved no more than giving the Muslim Brotherhood movement throughout the region a public visibility they previously lacked?huh.png

This is no different to MSNBC,NBC,ABC,CBS,CNN, who apply similar biased standards in their coverage or lack of coverage of a range of scandals in USA, including Fast & Furious, Benghazi, IRS, etc

Egypt jails Jazeera journalists for up to 10 years

CAIRO - An Egyptian court Monday sentenced three Al-Jazeera journalists including Australian Peter Greste to jail terms ranging from seven to 10 years after accusing them of aiding the blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood.

Greste and Egyptian-Canadian Mohamed Fadel Fahmy each got seven years, while producer Baher Mohamed received two sentences -- one for seven years and another for three years.

The three were among 20 defendants in a trial that has triggered international outrage amid fears of growing media restrictions in Egypt.

Eleven defendants who were tried in absentia, including three foreign journalists, were given 10-year sentences.

Of the six defendants in custody along with the three journalists, four were sentenced to seven years and two were acquitted.

As long as their are humans doing the reporting their will likely be some bias. Even if reporters cover a story impartially, editors still can decide what to publish and when to publish it. Whether it is a feature story or gets a 30 second blip is up to the management.

Unless these guys actually lied, they should not be charged or convicted.
