BANGKOK, 24 June 2014 (NNT) - Thailand has welcomed high-profile governmental and ministerial-level delegations as well as representatives from intergovernmental and international organizations from 63 countries in the Asia-Pacific region to the Sixth Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (6th AMCDRR).

The conference, held at the Bangkok Convention Center at Central World in Bangkok, is being organized jointly by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, under the Ministry of Interior of Thailand, and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The conference, which focuses on the theme “Promoting Investments for Resilient Nations and Communities,” has drawn 2,500 high-profile governmental and ministerial-level delegations, as well as representatives from intergovernmental and international organizations to discuss the Framework for Action to Manage Disaster Risk for Asia and the world at large.

This conference is expected to foster stronger commitment on disaster risk reduction among countries in Asia-Pacific, making it a resilient region with the most efficient disaster risk management and master sustainable programs in place.

Preventing natural disasters ? " Dear Mother Nature, how about giving us a break, no offence meant ! "

In LoS would that mean, for example, cash budgeted for flood prevention is actually spent on that project instead of ' disappearing ' ?

I think the evidence is in the Photo! We are told that delegations from all over the world attended this conference. Yet all we see are the Thai delegation in the photo. Which begs the question. Did they really have this conference or is this more propaganda and smoke screen BS.

BANGKOK, June 24 -- The 6th Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) officially kicked off in Bangkok on Tuesday, with a main aim to generate stronger political commitment and investment by Asian countries for disaster risk management and sustainable development.

The conference, opened by Gen Tanasak Patimapragorn, chief of Thailand's Defence Forces and deputy chief of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), at the Bangkok Convention Center at the Central World shopping complex this morning, will run until Thursday

Wiboon Sanguanpong, Permanent Secretary for Interior and acting Interior Minister said the conference was the last regional forum before the expiration of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015 next year.

It is aimed at reviewing achievements in disaster risk reduction in the region in the past decade and planning the reduction for the next decade.

Results of this conference will be proposed to the UN General Assembly in New York in September and be endorsed by the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR) in Sendai City of Japan next March.

"The conference will focus on promoting investments to enable countries and communities to cope with disasters and recover quickly from them. It will lead to the Bangkok Declaration that will consist of a framework for disaster risk reduction in the next decade and proposals on participation in disaster risk reduction from countries in the region," Mr Wiboon said.

Margot Wallstrom, UN special representative for disaster risk reduction, said Asia and the Pacific faced the greatest risk of natural disasters as in the past decade there were more than 10 big disasters. She commented that the conference created a good opportunity for experience exchange and the planning of disaster risk reduction.

Gen Tanasak said participating countries could use the conference as an occasion to collectively try to cope with disasters for mutual benefit. (MCOT online news)

For all of these comments, I am one of the deligates attending this particular conference and each session. Very useful dialogue between all attendees and it is "Asia focused" and not global. The US and Australian gov'ts were invited, but they declined due to the coup takeover of the legally elected gov't in Thailand, and both the US and EU gov'ts have now discontinued political and military relations.

However, this conference is sponsored by the UN and is targeted at Risk Reduction for any disaster, including Tsunaies, Earthquakes, Flooding or other incidences which kill or harm people and other financial assets.

Hope all of you will be supportive of such humanity efforts instead of critical.

You have to forgive our collective cynicism, some of us are aware of the previous governments comitment to the funds for such projects rather than the actuall projects themselves! They didn't show much interest to whether these projects were practical or the environmental impact they may have.

And while it is good to support such conferences for their desire to avoid such natural disasters, I think it is the governments of participating countries that ultimately need to support such efforts. We know how politicians in this country support such efforts, or is it the funds they support more?
