US-Germany match captures 15 million US viewers

More than 15 million Americans tuned in to watch Germany defeat the United States 1-0 their World Cup group finale, according to ratings data issued Friday by two broadcasters.

The ESPN sports network reported an average of 10,771,000 million viewers, peaking at 12,055,000 during the final half-hour of the Group G match, seen on the East Coast early Thursday afternoon.
Spanish-language Univision, which serves the growing Hispanic community across the country, said a total of 3.4 million viewers watched the game.
Despite the US loss, both squads advanced to the next round after Portugal's 2-1 win over Ghana proved insufficient to bump Team USA out of second place.
Both ESPN and Univision also reported record ratings for the entire first round of this year's World Cup, reflecting international soccer's growing popularity among Americans.
ESPN said the 48 opening round matches in Brazil telecast on its channels and on the ABC network averaged 3,540,000 viewers each, compared with 2,429,000 in 2010 and 1,691,000 in 2006.
Presenting its figures in another fashion, Univision said coverage of its entire group stage reached 62.3 million total viewers, or 27 percent more than the entire 2010 World Cup on its Univision Deportes sports channel.
Sunday's 2-2 match between United States and Portugal pulled an average of 18.2 million viewers on ESPN alone to become what the network called "the most-viewed soccer match in the United States ever."
The previous record-holder was the 1999 Women's World Cup final between the United States and China, with 18 million viewers.

well, I guess that after the final playoffs are done and USA grabs the world cup, we can once again sit back and turn on some real sports....like the NFL. Now that's football. Just wonder when the rest of the world is going to join us.

The remaining 300 million were watching a soap/sitcom, or some reality tv.

For the vast majority of your country, yes.

NFL? You mean those 300 pound gorillas in helmets all padded up wearing tights and mascara, most of whom never actually get to kick the 'ball'. laugh.png

No, I don't think the rest of the world is ever going to join you!

How a sport channel know exactly how many people watching a event?

It can only work with ip boxes or sat boxes with free telephone line to connect like sky in uk. But direct tv does not use the telephone line , maybe on satellite , but not on cable

Tested the box years ago on a journey to Florida! This means cable boxes cannot be monitored how many people watch at same time!

Another identicator is , always that the crime rate goes down , when the bad boys watching the football game and with this lower number of crimes it comes to the statistics of a game!
