Glad to see you back, Mr. Merton. :o

Why does one need to limit themselves to one or the other? That's my issue with political parties. As soon as you've labeled yourself one or the other you've commited yourself to fit into a certain sized box. We're all bigger than the dimensions of any box.

Why not support whatever works and leave the labels to those who like to label themselves?

Tippy is a sniveling, limp-wristed liberal.

...

I am not talking about political parties - but just our attitudes, and the way we describe them.

Who you vote for, and why, is a whole other Boon ball game.

I'm a Boon Mee Conservative! :o

Cheers Ulysses G! :D

I find that contrary to what typically happens the older I get the more I am open to liberal ideas.

From a fiscal standpoint however I am firmly in the conservative court.

I am all in favor of small government (traditionally a considered a conservative position, but rarely the result of having conservatives in charge (of liberals for that matter)).

Not sure why the above would be classified as 'liberal.' If I would describe my attitudes (in part) as the above would I be classed a liberal?

For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged, by better information or fuller consideration, to change opinions, even on important subjects, which I once thought right but found to be otherwise.

Benjamin Franklin

Find what works. If it doesn't then get rid of it. Don't be afraid to change beliefs.

What is conservative about so called modern republicans in the US who call themselves conservative?

They favor the opposite of conserving.

I'm an Independant Liberal Conservative.

The people should have enough freedom to allow their natural creativity and curiosity to flourish, and anyone who disagrees should be lined up against the wall (without rights, trials or due process) and shot !

...ah, the subtle views of the independent, liberal, conservative fascist - like poetry to my ears.

I was once accused of being a Bernsteinian revisionist.

Now, work that one out!

Well somedays I am a liberal conservative. Other days I am a conservative liberal. And yet on other days I am neither. It gets too confusing. I wil remain like Popeye.....

I am what I am!!!!!!!! :o

What about a fascialist (Socialist-Fascist) ?

Maybe an "Independant-Liberal-Conservative-Agnostic-Anarchist-Fascialist" ?

Why are these the only choices???

Because these two "attitudes" are often misused by politicians and so-called political commentators.

Unfortunately this incorrect use of the English language is often reflected in this forum, where for example "liberals" will argue against "conservatives" in a manner that an observer can only conclude is "conservative" (and, of course, vice versa).

I am, arrogantly, hoping a clearer understanding of the real meaning of these words and how they apply to each of us, might throw some light on these discussions (G-d knows they need it!).

Kerryd seems to be thinking on the right lines.

To the English - try this one:

Which was/is the most “conservative” - New Labour or Old Labour?

New Labour is the most conservative! Now that you've put it that way it's actually funny!

Because politics is Show Business.

Where politicians are the great illusionists, twisting the language to mean what they want it to mean; talking about a reality they have never known and seeking self-satisfaction as their ultimate ambition.

Better to be represented by Ken Dodd or Jimmy Tarbuck - at least they are funny and human.

And how about in the British parlament politicians using 'common culture' to make their points. One politician used several songs in her address. Why is Labour like the U2 song 'I still have not found what I'm looking for' and the chancellor should be listening to Dire straits 'Money for nothing'. And several others... It's embarassing, it's like watching your dad disco dancing at a wedding. What are they trying to achieve?

Hi TM!

I guess in life I´m a bit of nothing or everything. I have traditional views, but I´m up for change, etc... blah blah blah.

If I were to enter politics I´d ideally be liberal (green, Labour (old), something like that... Going for coalition governments) If I could not have the option of being supreme ruler and dictator.

Of course, if I wanted a chance of success in Democratic Politics, I´d have to go with Conservative.

I hope that answers your question.

:o

Kayo.
