30,000 confiscated firearms to be destroyed by Royal Thai Police

BANGKOK, 2 July 2014 (NNT) - Law enforcement officers from the Police Ordnance Division under the Royal Thai Police are preparing to dispose at least 30,000 guns on July 15.

Police Colonel Somporn Sajjapot, Deputy Commander of the Police Ordnance Division, has declared that all these guns have been confiscated from all combined police cases during the years of 2000 to 2014.

Among the cache included handguns, rifles, and shotguns, as well as pen guns and airsoft guns.

All of the guns would undergo a thorough inspection prior to being packed in sealed crates.

The crates containing the firearms will then be transferred to the Bangkok Steel smelting plant in Samut Prakan province early morning on July 15th.

This is the first time where the guns will be destroyed by melting them into liquid using a high-temperature furnace.

When I saw the title I thought to myself that 30,000 confiscated guns since the beginning of the year was pretty impressive.

But since the year 2000???? Less so.

It does make the collection in the last 6 weeks more impressive though.

I always thought the police sold them off on the black market? new sheriff in town must have put a stop to that

Why where they keeping them until now?

Agree the headline got me confused for a bit (what with the RTA's post coup weapon topic).

Hopefully, they are not destroying any weapons that are connected to unsolved cases.

Better to distribute the usable stuff to the village security volunteers and families in the 3 southern provinces.

Hey, instead destroying them, donate them to the Indian police/army, I see them often

on Tv armed with weapons from the first and second world war... I swear to you...

10,000000 known guns in Thailand. long way to go!

I know you're referring to the speech that scumbag Jarupong made about Thais having 10 million guns. thumbsup.gif

I didn't know sold from your car now classes as 'destroyed'

Tut tut tut, don't be so direct, they haven't been sold, they are no longer there so they have been destroyed. It's the new art of education now, being analytical.

All done in a patriotic manner of course!

experts at work! thumbsup.gif

Nobody asked them WHY they have been collecting guns since the year 2000? Wouldn't it be normal procedure to check them for criminal history if possible, and then have an annual cull of any which are not needed as evidence?

Oh sorry I forgot...TiT

Yeah right, gun fight at the OK corral. Our last headman was arrested for extortion with violence, another trusted member of the village high society a Chinese/Thai had his ( illegal ) gun borrowed by his wayward son for '"business purposes' but it didn't matter in the long run as his father was arrested soon after for drug dealing. Keep guns out of the villages, too much lao kao and not enough brain cells.

I believe these firearms could be put to good use...arm gov't officials...teachers and administrators...utility workers and anyone else in the crosshairs of the Southern separatist movement...teach them how to use the guns safely and effectively...give them a chance to defend themselves...OK...all you gun haters...have your go at me...

Those guns would be captured by the insurgents who would then have access to more guns. The army needs to completely destroy the insurgents.

Are you kidding me. Do you mean there was people who took him serious. I know with the education system being what it is there was Thais that did.

But foreigners? cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gifclap2.gif

This solves everything. No more dissent and peace will rule the day.

to be re issued with no paper work more likely

The army and negotiators have had over 10 years...nothing has really changed...over 600 innocents have been slaughtered during that time...If the insurgents know that their popular target have been armed...they may think twice before tracking down a lone teacher riding her motorcycle home...

The firearms were kept for such a long period of time due to the recycled resale value of the metal content being low in an already saturated market place.

"Issuing" firearms to school teachers & rubber collectors without proper training would be useless. Even if they were trained, the terrorists would continue to do what they do now. That is, shoot their victims in the back from the side of the road after they have passed on their motorbike, etc etc. And they would then have another gun. These cowards do not give many people opportunities to fight back. I am pro gun ownership but the south's problems will not be solved by giving them more guns. A change of civic attitude is necessary and I have no idea how to achieve that. Many more will die until religious & political "separatists" have their change of heart.

When you hear somebody make a claim like that, your first reaction would be that this guy exaggerating. However, the main motive behind the speech Jarupong made was that he was threatening the anti-government protesters back then to not demand anything from the government or else he would let his red-shirts use physical violence. Foreigners won't take him seriously of course, but most Thais know it's not a laughing matter.

I can agree with what you have written, but i think that a change in heart from the government is also necessary. The situation in the south seems to have its parallel with the troubles in Northern Ireland where sectarian violence spiraled horribly out of control. This was caused by unfair treatment of the Catholic population by the government ( i am an atheist, not pro Catholic) and was taken advantage of by people with their own agenda, not unlike the situation in the South.

And maybe because someone was waiting for a bulk order.
